Grehenheim, as a breeding kennel of German Shepherd Dogs, was founded in 1979. The kennel has subsequently grown to one of the most successful in South Africa. The breeding policy is modelled on the most successful (possibly the only successful) system in the world, namely the German system as run by the Deutsche Schäferhund Verein (SV). In order to remain up to date with new developments, regular

trips to Germany are undertaken. The kennel became the first kennel in South Africa to be awarded the Breeders’ Platinum medal as well as the Diamond Breeders' Award. In 2011 a Double Diamond Breeders' Award was received: the only in the history of the Federation. The kennel has won the National Kennel Group 13 times out of 18 competitions, 10 of which were consecutive. Whilst no breeder can guarantee that a puppy will be a show winner or perfect, we believe that temperament and health are paramount and will replace any animal up to the age of two years that have disqualifying faults not evident and pointed out to the new owner at the time of sale. Dogs owned by us have won the National Sieger title on seven occasions and the bitch Tia von Grehenheim was South African Siegerin in 2005.

This is the difference between backyard breeders/puppy mills and those who do it as a passion. I was up every two hours on Friday night checking on Kwezi, missed the Rugby on Saturday as she was whelping. She is in a special whelping room with infra red heating, CCTV linked to my lounge and bedroom, soft music playing, ad-lib premium food at her disposal, bio-secutiry foot baths etc. I am still making sure that all pups are feeding properly, that they are warm and Mom and babies are all comfortable.... It is a HUGE responsibility and commitment to breed dogs ethically and then unfortunately many members of the public don't understand why the puppies cost more than what they can get via 'free adverts'
