There seems to be a huge confusion about private veterinary practices rendering welfare work via the South African Community Veterinary clinics. In Gauteng there exist a 3 way partnership between SAVA CVC, GDARD and private veterinary practices donating time and infrastructure to indigent pet owners. The GDARD in part subsides the clinical work (sterilisations and vaccinations) and Hatfield Bird and Animal Hospital has been allocated 2 fully qualified veterinarians, doing their community year for DAFF, to do the clinical work. These veterinarians are dedicated, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable and has a BVSc Veterinary degree. They are NOT students. GDARD only subsidize a percentage of the medications and consumables and the remainder of the expenses are carried by the veterinary practice rendering the clinical service. Negative propaganda and ignorant comments harm these partnerships and the only ones who suffer are the animals. Please be mindful of comments and assumptions, assure that you are well informed before accusing veterinarians of only being interested in making money and be grateful for those veterinarians who are willing to take time out of their veterinary practices to go into areas and work under difficult conditions.

Another successfull sterilisation and vaccination campaign. Makapanstad has been a CVC clinic for many years. Due to extreme poverty owners have been unable to afford sterilisation of their animals. Due to the fact that Makapantad falls outside of Gauteng, veterinary services could not be subsidized by GDARD funds. However due to a very generous sponsorship Hatfield Bird and Animal Hospital can now sterilised 60 animals free of charge.

Do you know what that tipped ear means? During a procedure, vets will remove the tip of an ear to signify that the animal has already been Trapped, Neutered (or spayed!) and Returned to their home - preventing being trapped again and put under for a surgery they don’t need. So the next time you see a tipped ear, know that someone has already caught that cat and had it TNR’d!

In 5 short months at a new location we have been privileged to be part of so many projects, making a difference to the lives of many pets living with indigent and challenged pet owners. Having two young, enthusiastic and dedicated veterinarians doing their Community year at Hatfield Bird and Animal Hospital has allowed us to follow our passion and do what Vets really want to do: Make a difference. One of the many project that Hatfield B&A donate to professionally and intellectually is the SAVA Community Veterinary Clinics: our veterinarians attend 6 of the 13 SAVA CVC Clinics in Gauteng.
