Losing a pet isn’t just about saying goodbye to them—it can also change our social lives. If your pet was a big part of your daily routine, your friend group, or activities like training classes or walks, stepping back into those spaces without them can feel overwhelming.

💙 Take it at your own pace. Start with small, familiar interactions before jumping back into big social settings.

💬 Be honest about your feelings. It’s okay to say, “I still miss [pet’s name], but I wanted to see everyone.” Most pet lovers will understand.

🐾 Stay involved in a way that feels right. Whether it’s supporting others, volunteering, or simply watching from the sidelines, you can still be part of your pet community in a way that feels comfortable.

🌿 Find new ways to connect. If pet-centered activities feel too painful right now, consider meeting up with friends outside of those spaces.

There’s no right or wrong way to return to social life after a loss—only what feels best for you. If you’ve been through this, what helped you reconnect? 💙🐾

🌈Forever in Our Hearts🌈

The paws that once danced through fields of green,
Now tread in dreams, in moments unseen.
Their eyes, like stars, still light our way,
Guiding our hearts through each passing day.

No longer beside us, but never apart,
They live in the echoes of every heartbeat's start.
Their love was pure, their loyalty strong,
A bond that remains, though they've been gone so long.

In quiet whispers, we hear their name,
In the soft winds, we feel the same.
The wag of a tail, the purr of delight,
In memories, they live, ever so bright.

Though they’ve crossed to where the rainbow ends, Their love endures, forever transcends.
For once a pet, forever a friend,
In our hearts, their story has no end.

Losing a pet is difficult for the whole family, and explaining it to children can feel overwhelming. Here are a few compassionate tips to help guide this sensitive conversation:

● Be Honest, Yet Gentle – Use simple, age-appropriate language. Let them know their pet has passed away and won’t be coming back, but avoid euphemisms like "gone to sleep," which can confuse or scare them.

● Encourage Questions – Allow your child to ask anything they need to understand what happened. Be patient and answer openly, even if the questions are tough.

● Acknowledge Their Emotions – Reassure your child that it's okay to feel sad, angry, or confused. Everyone grieves differently, and their feelings are valid.

● Create a Memorial Together – Help your child find closure by creating a special memory, like drawing pictures of your pet, planting a tree, or making a scrapbook.

● Be There – Most importantly, offer comfort and let them know you're there to help them through the sadness. Sometimes just holding space for their feelings is enough.

Saying goodbye is never easy, but with love and support, your child can learn to cope and cherish the beautiful memories they shared with their pet. ❤️

Losing a pet is never just about losing the pet's physical presence.

It is also about losing routine, identity, purpose, direction, and unconditional love. So, do not let anybody tell you that "you've just lost a pet".

You have lost a part of who you are and what you are, and it is OK to grieve that loss in any capacity that you feel is necessary to enable you to move on and come to peace with the fact that your pet is no longer with you.

They saw you watching over them
As they finally closed their eyes
They smelt your scent as they breathed
In and out for the last time

They heard the way your voice broke
As you told them they were loved
They felt you as you held them
With your gentle, farewell touch
And now they watch each morning
As you pass their empty bed

They watch you lose composure
And they see the tears you shed
They hear you bear the silence
Of the footsteps that are gone
That walk across your heart each day
Like echoes of a song

They feel the pang of emptiness
You get when you’re alone
In moments when you realise
That they’re never coming home
But in their darkest moment
You were there to hold them tight
And they just want the same for you
So you can feel alright

So they’re sewing you a rainbow,
Weaving ribbons through the sky
So they can let you know
That life is good beyond goodbye
So next time it is raining
And the sun appears as well
Just feel and look and listen
To what they are trying to tell
They’re telling you it’s spring there
With its showers and its sun
Where there are endless fields for them
To play and stretch and run

They’re telling you they sleep upon
The biggest, softest beds
That they have stitched from all the clouds
That float above your head
They’re telling you they’re not alone
For there are many others
And they’ve been reunited
With their parents, sisters, brothers

They’re showing you their rainbow
So you know they won’t forget you
And to tell you they will always be
So happy that they met you
And they’re telling you they love you
And though they’ll be dearly missed,
Not to worry, ‘cause it’s beautiful
Beyond the rainbow bridge

When is it time to say goodbye?

This is a question we all ask ourselves when we have aging and/or ailing pets.

This is an article I wrote for a UK based Magazine on this very difficult topic.
