Canine Distemper Cases in Pretoria West & North
There have been reported cases of canine distemper in Pretoria West and parts of Pretoria North, says the Tshwane SPCA. This highly contagious virus attacks a dog’s respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems, and it can be fatal.
⚠️ What you need to know
Symptoms include:
• Fever, eye and nose discharge
• Coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea
• Lethargy, loss of appetite
• Seizures, tremors, paralysis, and death. There is no cure! treatment is supportive only.
- How to protect your pet
1. Vaccinate on schedule - Make sure your dog is up to date with their routine vaccinations.
2. Keep sick dogs isolated - If you suspect distemper (even mild symptoms), keep your dog away from other dogs and get your dog to the vet as soon as possible.
3. Know the signs & act early - Early treatment/support improves outcome. If you see early symptoms (ocular or nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy), contact your veterinarian immediately.
4. Limit contact with stray animals - Stray dogs can carry the virus. Minimizing direct contact lowers risk.
What we’re urging from the community
• Check that your pet’s vaccinations are up to date!
• If you see sick dogs, report to the local SPCA.
• If you suspect your pet may have been exposed to or has the virus, please call your vet immediately for advice.
Stay safe, Pretoria. Let’s protect our furry friends together. 🐾
