Shrimp information
Please take note that if this is the first time you have seen or heard about freshwater shrimp, this information is only basic guidelines. There is so much more to know about shrimp keeping, and we will be happy to help you in what you need to get your shrimp colony started.
Shrimp are a great addition to any aquarium as they require little maintenance and care and act as the aquarium's cleaning crew. They can live happily with many other species of tropical fish. They are fascinating and entertaining to watch.
Our main goal at Aqua Shrimp is to breed and sell high-quality, hardy, locally bred Neocardina shrimp like Bloody Mary, Blue Sapphire and Black Rose that can survive in any freshwater aquarium.
To enable anyone to keep shrimp in their aquariums, we breed our Neocaridina shrimp in tap water.
How to choose Shrimp for your aquarium shrimp?
First, you should be aware of the fact that there are different types of shrimp. We will focus on the two main types of shrimp that are the most popular in the hobby: Caridina and Neocaridina, and it is important to note that they require different water and parameters.
Which shrimp should you select for your standard aquarium? Your best option, is Neocaridina.
In order to understand why Neocaridina shrimp are the best choice for newcomers in the shrimp hobby and for those who have freshwater aquariums with tap water. Let's look at the main reason for this.
Caridina shrimp come in a variety of colours and patterns. They are beautiful but need experience to keep and a lot of care.
The care needed for Caridina shrimp are more complicated than those for neocaridina shrimp. They need specific water conditions to survive and are sensitive to changes in water parameters. They favour water with a low pH that is somewhat acidic. Using RO water with additional minerals is recommended almost a must. In an aquarium containing tap water, caridina shrimp may not survive or thrive. They are not ideal shrimp for beginners.
Neocaridina shrimps are hardy and adaptable to a wide range of water conditions. It is easy to take care of them in freshwater aquariums. All they require are stable water parameters and a tank that has been properly cycled but can also thrive in tap water.
Tank Mates: Shrimp can be eaten by larger aggressive fish and made into an expensive meal. The rule is if it fits in the mouth it will be eaten.
Ideal tank mates include:
• Freshwater Snails (Ivory, Mystery, Gold Inca, Nerite, Malaysian Trumpet)
• Catfish (Cory and Otocinclus)
• Small Plecos
• Small Tetras (Neon Tetra, Emper Tetra, Lamp eye Tetra)
• Danios
• Endlers
Keep in mind that occasionally your shrimp might be mistaken for food, even with the fish described above. You should make sure your aquarium has plenty of plants and hiding places to provide your shrimp more protection.
Of course, there is plenty more to learn about keeping shrimp, but if you already have a tank with smaller tropical fish, your chances of keeping Neocaridina shrimps are very good.
