BORN THIS WAY?
Do we automatically expect certain breeds to behave in a certain way because of their genetics?

Why is a dog the way they are? Are they just born this way?

Genetics certainly play a part, but genetics are not always a reliable predicter of behaviour.

Genetics may provide us with insight as to what could be expected, but it’s so much more than just that.

Genetics, environment, life experiences and individuality all play a role in shaping a dog’s behaviour.

Just like us, dogs are unique individuals, each with their own personalities, emotions, likes and dislikes, sociability, preferences or different health issues. These often change throughout life.

Just as we learn and change through our life experiences, so do dogs. Negative or positive experiences, trauma, stress, learnt habits, training methods, trust, feeling safe and secure, predictability and stability are all part of how these types of experiences affect behaviour.

Many dogs live in environments that are not compatible with what they were selectively bred to do.

People bred dogs to do certain jobs like guarding, herding, hunting, pointing, scenting, tracking or companionship.

When dogs that were bred for specific jobs, find themselves “unemployed” and have no outlet for what they were originally bred to do, this often leads to pent up frustration and behaviour problems.

Conflict between the environment and a dog’s genetics are an increasingly common reason for behaviour problems.

Yes, a dog may have just been “born this way”, but always look at the whole picture to understand the why of behaviour.

Genetics, environment, individuality and experiences – they all matter.

Meet Zozo the retriever and Mika the rottie! These two have very similar stories, rescues that were very anxiois, became very reactive due to that and after lots of confidence building, they are doing SO well. Thanks to Mr Wagyu, the dog therapy dog for becoming their first strange friend, they are slowly but surely learning to trust each other as well. I am beyond proud of both sets of guardians for working EXTREMELY hard and trusting the process - your dogs are THRIVING because of it🥰

Meet RAGNAR!

As you all know, I am such a sucker for bulldogs, I just never turn one down😂 Ragnar needed some help as his guardians described him as "very excited" around people and he couldn't listen around distractions.
When I met Ragnar he was indeed excited, to put it lightly😂
We got right down to it though, started with the basics, built on it and even managed to get him to be able to be in a group class- and he was able to finish the course!
His guardian, Catherina and Cinjin have been so epic to work with. Every single time I saw them they were followikg the exercises to the T, and Mr Ragnar improved every single time.
So when I asked for some feedback and got these photos, I was beyond happh!
Ragnar got to go on holiday with them and was the BEST boy!
Well done guys! I cannot wait to see how much more he improves🥰

It's that time of year where we have to talk about end of year procedures!
We believe in prioritizing the socialization of all puppies, so we make sure we can accommodate you as late as possible. Therefore, we are still taking in new pups until our close date, 13 December. Even if your pup only does one class, it's still beneficial.
When you sign up for our six week Yoda Pups class, if you complete only two lessons this year, you can finish your course next year when we open again, on the 10th of January.
If you want any advice on when to enroll your pups, just pop me an email at [email protected]
See you at class!
