Holistic means looking at a whole system, person, or problem rather than just separate small parts. It comes from the Greek word holos, meaning "whole".

In agriculture, a holistic approach means treating the entire farm as a single, interconnected living system. Instead of looking at crops, livestock, soil, and finances as separate pieces, holistic farming focuses on how they all impact and support one another. The primary framework for this is called Holistic Management, which was pioneered by Allan Savory. It is widely used in regenerative agriculture to restore degraded land, build climate resilience, and ensure financial survival.

The Eastern Cape has an excellent climate for growing green peppers, but because peppers love warmth, timing is important.
Best planting time
Coastal Eastern Cape (Gqeberha, Greenbushes): Plant seedlings from late August to November, once the risk of cold nights has passed.
Inland Eastern Cape: Wait until September or October, when nighttime temperatures stay above 12°C.
Since it's July, keep your seedlings protected in a tunnel, greenhouse, or sunny sheltered area for a few more weeks.
Preparing the soil
Peppers grow best in:
Well-drained soil rich in compost.
Soil pH between 6.0 and 6.8.
At least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight every day.
As someone building a compost business, your own mature compost is ideal. Mix 5–10 cm of compost into the top 20–30 cm of soil before planting.
Planting
Space plants 40–50 cm apart.
Leave 60–75 cm between rows.
Plant at the same depth as they were growing in their seedling trays.
Water immediately after planting.
Watering
Water deeply 2–3 times per week, depending on the weather.
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
Mulch around the plants with straw, dry grass, or compost to conserve moisture.
Feeding
Add compost at planting.
Feed every 2–3 weeks with a balanced vegetable fertilizer or compost tea.
Once flowers appear, a fertilizer slightly higher in potassium helps produce more peppers.
Common problems
Flowers dropping: Usually caused by cold weather or heat stress.
Aphids: Spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Snails and slugs: Protect young plants with traps or barriers.
Harvest
Green peppers are usually ready 70–90 days after transplanting. Pick them while they are firm and glossy. Regular harvesting encourages the plants to keep producing.
Since you sell seedlings in the Greenbushes/Gqeberha area, now is a great time to grow your pepper seedlings in trays so they'll be ready for customers when the warmer spring planting season begins.

Green bell peppers are low in calories and packed with nutrients, making them a healthy addition to most diets.

Here are some of their key benefits:
Rich in vitamin C: One medium green pepper provides a large portion of your daily vitamin C needs, which supports your immune system, wound healing, and healthy skin.
Good source of antioxidants: They contain compounds like flavonoids and carotenoids that help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
High in fiber: Fiber promotes healthy digestion, helps you feel full longer, and can support healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
Supports eye health: Green peppers contain lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that may help protect against age-related eye diseases.
Low in calories: With only about 20–30 calories per medium pepper, they're a great choice for weight management.
Heart health: Their fiber, potassium, and antioxidants may contribute to healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular health.
Hydrating: Green peppers are over 90% water, helping with hydration.
Compared with yellow, orange, and red bell peppers, green peppers are less sweet and slightly lower in vitamins A and C, but they are still highly nutritious and often less expensive.
They can be enjoyed:
Raw in salads or with dips
Stir-fried with vegetables and lean protein
Roasted or grilled
Stuffed with grains, beans, or meat
Added to omelets, soups, and sandwiches
If you have acid reflux or a sensitive stomach, raw peppers may trigger symptoms in some people, but cooking them often makes them easier to digest.

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth. It includes all living organisms—plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms—as well as the ecosystems they form and the genetic differences within species.
There are three main levels of biodiversity:
Genetic diversity – Variation in genes within a species.
Example: Different varieties of rice or breeds of dogs.
Species diversity – The variety of different species in a particular area.
Example: A rainforest with thousands of plant, bird, insect, and mammal species.
Ecosystem diversity – The variety of ecosystems in a region.
Examples: Forests, grasslands, deserts, wetlands, and oceans.
Importance of biodiversity
Maintains ecological balance.
Provides food, medicine, and raw materials.
Supports pollination and soil fertility.
Helps regulate climate and water cycles.
Increases ecosystem resilience to environmental changes.
Threats to biodiversity
Habitat destruction (deforestation, urbanization)
Pollution
Climate change
Overexploitation of natural resources
Invasive species
Conservation methods
Establishing protected areas such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.
Afforestation and habitat restoration.
Sustainable use of natural resources.
Preventing illegal hunting and wildlife trade.
Raising public awareness and enforcing environmental laws.
Definition: Biodiversity is the variety and variability of living organisms, their genes, and the ecosystems in which they live. It is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting life on Earth.
