Meet Nikita…

Nikita lives a peaceful, home-centred life, with plenty of time spent in the company of animals. Her small beauty business gives her the flexibility to shape her days around the pets entrusted to her, allowing her to be present and attentive throughout their time in her care.

Over time, she has cared for animals with very different personalities and needs, from energetic dogs, to older companions who appreciate a slower pace and a little more patience. She has a particular fondness for cats and understands the value of giving them a calm environment where they can approach interaction on their own terms. For Nikita, caring for a pet is about becoming familiar with the individual behind the whiskers, wagging tail or curious expression.

Bernese Mountain Dogs were first exhibited at Swiss dog shows in the early 1900's, where their combination of strength and elegance attracted widespread admiration. The breed gained international recognition after being imported into Europe and North America, where they quickly became admired for both companionship and working ability.

This breed nearly disappeared during the late nineteenth century as industrialisation reduced the need for traditional draft dogs on farms. They owe their preservation to Swiss professor Albert Heim, who recognised the breed's value in the early twentieth century and helped establish formal breeding programmes.

Bernese Mountain Dogs have appeared in numerous family films, television programmes, and advertising campaigns. They are also frequently featured in alpine tourism campaigns, where they symbolise traditional Swiss farming heritage and mountain life.

Meet Max…

Behind his stature and size is a heart bigger than any other. Boerboels are known for their confidence, intelligence and close connection to those they trust, and Max displays these qualities perfectly.

As a Custodian, getting to know a dog, like Max, means paying attention to the little things. The way he approaches someone he knows, the expressions he makes when something has caught his attention, and his body language that expresses what he wants. The way he cuddles up to his favourite stuffed toy at night melts our hearts every time. Learning the individual preferences of each pet is what makes our experience so rewarding.

They have surprisingly long lifespans for gallinaceous birds, sometimes reaching up to 15 years old. United in social groups, called coveys, they move as a coordinated unit when feeding and travelling. Guinea fowl dust-bathe frequently to maintain feather condition, remove excess oils, external parasites, and debris.

Their eggs have a stronger shell than typical chicken eggs, reducing water loss during incubation and providing increased protection against accidental damage. When startled, Guinea fowl often choose to sprint rather than fly. Their long legs and powerful muscles allow them to move through dense vegetation at high speeds.

Chewing is natural for dogs, and a good chew toy can turn that instinct into a rewarding form of play. The repeated pulling, gripping and chewing keeps them occupied while giving them something constructive to focus on. This is also a satisfying way to release some of their energy between walks. And how rewarding it is, even for us, to watch them settle in with their new favourite toy, work out the best way to hold it, and to play their own little game.

Balto became internationally famous after leading the final stage of the Nome Serum Run and is today commemorated with a bronze statue in New York City's Central Park. Balto's preserved remains are displayed at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Although Balto became the public face of the mission, another Siberian Husky named Togo completed the longest and most physically demanding section of the relay, covering more than 420 kilometres, inspiring the 2019 feature film Togo.
