Better understanding of dogs.
One of the biggest myths about dogs is that they see the world in black and white.
They donโt.
๐ณ Dogs do see colour, just not the same range of colours that we do.
๐ How does a dogโs vision differ from ours?
Humans are ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ฌ, meaning we have three types of colour-sensitive cone cells in our retinas. These allow us to distinguish millions of colours across the red, green and blue spectrum.
๐ถ Dogs, however, are ๐๐ข๐๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ฌ. They have only two types of cone cells, making their colour vision more similar to a person with red-green colour blindness.
Soโฆ what colours can dogs actually see?
โ
Dogs see blue and yellow most clearly.
Colours such as red, orange and green appear much less distinct and often blend into shades of yellow, brown or grey.
A rough comparison looks like this:
๐ต Blue โ Blue
๐ก Yellow โ Yellow
๐ข Green โ Yellowish-beige
๐ Orange โ Yellow-brown
๐ด Red โ Brownish-grey or dark yellow
๐ฃ Purple โ Blue
This means that a bright red toy thrown onto green grass may be surprisingly difficult for a dog to spot because both colours appear very similar to them.
๐ค Does this mean dogs have poor vision?
Not at all.
In fact, dogs outperform humans in several important ways.
โ
Better vision in low light.
โ
Excellent movement detection.
โ
Wider field of view in many breeds.
โ
A visual system that works alongside an extraordinary sense of smell to build a picture of the world.
Rather than evolving to appreciate colourful landscapes, dogs evolved to detect movement and navigate effectively at dawn and dusk. Their eyes contain many more rod cells, which are specialised for detecting motion and seeing in dim light.
In other words, dogs traded a wider colour palette for better survival.
๐ค What does this mean for training?
Understanding how dogs see the world can help us make better choices.
โข Choose blue or yellow toys if you want them to be easy to find outdoors.
โข Donโt assume your dog notices colour contrasts that seem obvious to you.
โข Remember that dogs rely on many senses at once. Vision is only one part of how they understand their environment.
๐ฌThe science
Canine colour vision has been studied for decades. Behavioural experiments and retinal anatomy consistently show that dogs possess two cone photoreceptors, with peak sensitivities around 429 nm (blue-violet) and 555 nm (yellow-green). This confirms that dogs have blue-yellow dichromatic vision, rather than the full colour spectrum seen by humans.
๐ The landmark study by Neitz, Geist & Jacobs (1989) demonstrated that dogs can reliably distinguish blue from yellow but have difficulty separating red from green, findings that have since been supported by further vision research.
How cool is that ?
