*PUBLIC NOTICE: AVOID SEALS ON THE BEACH*
The Bitou Municipality reminds members of the public to avoid seals on the beach and, as a precautionary measure, exit the water when a seal is spotted in proximity. We have recently noted a number of seals displaying unusual aggressive behaviour that may be linked to rabies.
TAKE NOTE:
1. Keep a distance from seals at all times, both in water and on land.
2. Do not chase, touch or try to hold a seal.
3. Do not hit or harm seals — this is cruelty to animals and is punishable by law.
4. Make sure dogs are under control and always on leash.
5. Do not touch, handle or consume a seal carcass or any parts thereof.
6. Listen to and obey requests to evacuate the sea or coastal areas as given by municipal officials, life-saving personnel, staff of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment or their representatives.
7. If bitten by a seal, immediately flush the wound with soap and water for 5–10 minutes and seek urgent medical attention.
8. Report any seals ashore or seal-related incidents immediately to the Hotline WhatsApp +27 79 463 4837, or the Municipality Toll Free 0800 212 797 (available 24/7).
