DIVINE SOVEREIGNTY - Faith For Daily Living
“Then the wind died down and it was completely calm”.
Mk 4:39 NIV

The question often arises in this topsy-turvy world as to who actually has the real power. Sometimes it is said that the president of the United States is the most powerful person on earth. Despite this, some unbelievably rich people seem to exert enormous influence. Sometimes it seems that blind forces with no consistent pattern or purpose are pushing the world first this way and then that and the official leaders haven’t a clue what to do.

Throughout the Bible one of the recurring themes is the sovereignty of God. He created the world. And he sustains it. He called Abraham and he parted the waters at the time of the Exodus. When the Israelites were exiled in Babylon he raised up the Persians who sent the exiles home. When Jesus commanded the evil spirits to come out of people he was declaring that he and God had sovereignty over them - and therefore over all evil powers. And when Jesus commanded the winds and waves to be still he was again asserting his right and power to rule over the dark and demonic forces that so often seem to be all-powerful. This puts a completely different slant on the impression, often portrayed, that Jesus was the man of Galilee just helping, healing and teaching. The supreme exercise of God’s sovereignty came on Easter Day when God the Father raised Jesus the Son from the grave and confounded all the unruly forces that seemed to have been let loose only three days earlier. The importance of the miracle of stilling the storm is the demonstration it gives of God’s supreme sovereignty.

The comings and goings of human power are unimportant. Ultimately God is Sovereign Lord.
