SPCA Pietermaritzburg - ❗️PLEASE READ❗️

The truth is that our Society is struggling financially and we NEED YOUR HELP 🙏

Vehicles & Fuel ⛽️ 🛻 We have 4 vehicles on the road all day, everyday. They are used to tend to emergencies, cruelty complaints, welfare checks, collection of surrendered animals (and, and, and) all of which, we do not charge for and as we all know, the fuel prices are insane but we won't and can't deny an animal in need because we need to pinch pennies!

Cleaning Products 🧼🪒🪣 Our kennels, catteries, clinic and offices need to be clean and sterile for the wellbeing of the animals in our care. Floors and walls are scrubbed and disinfected. Surfaces are wiped down and sterilized. Bowls, beds and blankets are washed and cleaned daily. Cleaning products are not donated, we purchase these in. Soap, F10, Jik, cloths, mops, brooms, scrubbing brushes, sanitizer, bin bags. Price these items individually and then imagine what we spend because, we buy in bulk.

PPE 🧤👖 We recently reached out to several suppliers asking for donations or a discount on purchases. With the economy as it is, we were not surprised when assistance was not given. We spent just over R8000 on PPE and we still have items outstanding. Safety Boots, Gum Boots, work shirts, overalls...these are NOT cheap but they ARE needed.

Cat Litter 🐈 If you use cat litter, you understand how this can be an expense that needs to be noted. Cats are clean animals and do not like their waste lingering around which means constant cleaning and topping up of their litter trays. We also allocate a litter tray to each cat and kitten in our care.

Medical Expenses 💉🩺 animals in our care receive vaccines, deworming medication, tick and flea prevention, medical treatment if needed, dipping, special dietary food if needed and more. Our adoption fee for dogs and puppies is R850 and for cats and kittens, R550. This does not cover the cost of their time with us, their sterilization, their vaccinations, the care they receive and the salary of the staff members that tend to their needs and who ensure their wellbeing.

Lights and Water 💧 💡 Our recent Municipal payment was R43 235.66 this is a huge amount to pay out for any company but, imagine our stress when we can not plan around a set guaranteed future income. We need water to clean kennels, flush toilets, for fresh drinking water, washing of blankets etc We need electricity for our medical machines, computers, offices.

Unexpected Expenses 😖 Planning does not work when some things are out of our control. Last week one of our vehicles had to go to the mechanic. Two weeks ago, one of our geysers burst and we had to pay the excess of R1500. Our Reception laptop has crashed and we can't afford to replace it.

Security 🚨🚓 We have alarm systems, security guards, emergency response. None of this is cheap but in this day and age and considering our luck in the past as well as the IMPORTANCE OF THE SAFETY OF THE ANIMALS IN OUR CARE, we can not, not have our property monitored and protected.

Salaries and Overtime ⏰️🤐 Yes, this is a taboo topic BUT, how do you think our daily operations function? Our Inspectors and Field Officers have to study, they receive training and they do exams and practicals to receive their titles. They are verbally abused, they see things daily that would make you break, they sometimes put themselves at risk to help any and all animals day and night. Our clinic, kennel and office staff make sure the animals in our care are treated, cared for and are protected. While our Furniture, Book and Music Room and Furniture shops are run by fantastic volunteers and our Committee serves on a voluntary basis, we can not rely on volunteers to show up 5 days a week, 8 hours a day and for 4 hours on a Saturday and Sunday. We can not rely on volunteers to be available for standby 24 hours a day for emergencies and cruelty cases. We certainly (unless qualified) can not rely on volunteers to offer medical treatment.

Cell Phones 📱☎️ Each person on our Inspectorate team has a cell phone and we have a cell phone dedicated to emergencies, cruelty complaints and standby. This leads to data, airtime and contract expenses.

"Sticks and stones may break our bones but WORDS WILL in fact HURT US" - And, when we say "US" we mean the animals in our care 🐶🐱 We are aware of the people who bad mouth our Society and profess to "Know better". Remember, Maritzburg is small. We know we are within our right to defend ourselves but our time and our words are better spent helping animals, the voiceless, the ones being put at risk by your judgement and your lack of knowledge of The Animals Protection Act as well as our standard operating procedures.

Pietermaritzburg SPCA needs support. The animals out there and the animals in our care need your financial assistance. WE NEED YOU!

🐾 Is Your Dog a Senior? 🐾

Just like people, our dogs experience changes as they get older. While those grey hairs and slower walks may seem normal, regular health checks become even more important in their golden years.

Signs your dog may be entering their senior stage:
🐶 Sleeping more than usual
🐶 Stiffness or difficulty getting up
🐶 Changes in appetite or weight
🐶 Increased thirst or urination
🐶 Cloudy eyes or hearing loss
🐶 New lumps and bumps

Many age-related conditions, such as arthritis, kidney disease, diabetes, and dental disease, can be managed more successfully when detected early.

A senior health check allows us to assess your pet's overall wellbeing and identify any concerns before they become bigger problems.

Because growing old is a privilege, let's help our senior companions stay comfortable, happy, and healthy for as long as possible. ❤️🐾
