Comparing protein contents of wet foods against dry foods

To effectively compare the protein contents of wet and dry dog foods with different moisture contents, you need to calculate the protein content on a dry matter basis. Here's how to do it:

1. **Check the labels:** Look for the percentage of protein listed on the labels of both wet and dry dog foods.

2. **Determine the moisture content:** Note the percentage of moisture content listed on the labels. For example, if the wet food has 80% moisture and the dry food has 10% moisture.

3. **Calculate dry matter basis:** Subtract the moisture content percentage from 100 to find the dry matter percentage. In this example, for wet food, 100% - 80% = 20% dry matter. For dry food, 100% - 10% = 90% dry matter.

4. **Adjust protein content:** Divide the listed protein percentage by the dry matter percentage and multiply by 100 to find the protein content on a dry matter basis. For example, if the wet food has 10% protein and the dry food has 25% protein:

- For wet food: (10% protein / 20% dry matter) * 100 = 50% protein on a dry matter basis.
- For dry food: (25% protein / 90% dry matter) * 100 = approximately 27.78% protein on a dry matter basis.

5. **Compare:** Now, you can effectively compare the protein contents of both wet and dry dog foods on a level playing field, considering their different moisture contents. In this example, even though the wet food may appear to have lower protein content on the label, when adjusted for moisture content, it may actually have a higher protein content than the dry food.
