tatistically, large, deep-chested breeds are more prone to developing Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV). Breeds at higher risk include:
Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Weimaraner, Irish Setter, Gordon Setter, Standard Poodle, Basset Hound, Doberman Pinscher, and Old English Sheepdog.

But remember — any dog can bloat, even smaller breeds like Dachshunds and Chihuahuas.

GDV most commonly occurs shortly after eating a large meal, though it can happen at any time.

Dogs weighing over 100 pounds face about a 20% lifetime risk of bloat.

Gastric dilatation without volvulus (twisting) can even occur in elderly, small dogs.

Awareness saves lives — know the risks and watch the signs.

The exact cause of Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat, is still unknown — but several risk factors have been identified.

Anxiety and stress can play a role — relaxed, calm dogs are at lower risk than “hyper” or “fearful” dogs. Illness that decreases intestinal motion may also contribute.

Is GDV serious?
Absolutely. It’s one of the most critical, non-traumatic conditions in dogs. Without immediate veterinary attention (within minutes to hours), it can be fatal.

Knowing the risks and acting fast can save your dog’s life.

If you’ve ever heard the term “bloat” in dogs, you may have assumed it simply meant a bit of digestive discomfort after a meal. In reality, it’s far more serious.

Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV) — commonly referred to as bloat — is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when a dog’s stomach fills with gas and twists on itself. This twisting cuts off blood flow and traps contents inside, leading to rapid shock and, if untreated, death.

While any dog can be affected, GDV is most common in large, deep-chested breeds.

Know the signs. Act fast. It could save your dog’s life.

Common signs include:

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a slow, progressive loss of kidney function over time. It’s more common in older pets and can affect their ability to filter waste, balance fluids, and maintain overall health.

Signs to look out for:
🔹 Increased thirst and urination
🔹 Weight loss
🔹 Bad breath
🔹 Vomiting
🔹 Lethargy

While CKD can't be cured, early diagnosis and proper management can greatly improve your pet’s quality of life. Regular vet check-ups are key!

Acute kidney failure happens when your pet’s kidneys suddenly stop working properly — often over just a few hours or days. This can be caused by toxins (like antifreeze or lilies in cats), infections, dehydration, or certain medications.

Signs to watch for:
🔸 Vomiting
🔸 Lethargy
🔸 Loss of appetite
🔸 Increased or decreased urination
🔸 Bad breath or ulcers in the mouth

Early treatment is critical — acute kidney failure can be life-threatening, but with quick veterinary care, recovery is possible.

When in doubt, call your vet!

That’s right — unlike humans (and even cows), horses can’t burp, vomit, or breathe through their mouths. Their digestive system is a one-way street, designed to move food in only one direction.

While horses are excellent at digesting fibrous forage, this system can cause trouble if things go wrong — especially when it comes to colic, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition.

Always keep an eye on your horse’s eating habits, water intake, and behavior — and chat to your vet if something seems off.

Healthy gut, happy horse!
