⚠️ URGENT PET MEDICATION UPDATE: Phenobarbital Shortage ⚠️

As many of you are already aware of, we are currently facing a critical supply gap of Phenobarbital 30mg (Sedabarb/Lethyl) and it is officially unavailable nationwide through regular supply channels. Because there is no ready supply, we have already started the transition of affected pets to alternative protocols (such as Pexion and/or Levetiracetam) immediately.

The Transition: What to Expect
Changing seizure medication is a major adjustment for your pet’s brain. During this "bridge" period, it is very common to see transition symptoms, including:

Temporary wobbliness or "drunken" walking.

Increased sleepiness or restlessness.

Minor "odd" behaviors or focal twitching.

The "Overlap" Strategy (Crucial!)
If you still have a small supply of Phenobarbital left, do not stop it immediately. To keep your pet safe:

Overlap is key: We will aim to start the new medication (Pexion) while your pet is still taking their remaining Phenobarbital.

The Goal: We want to keep both medications in the system as long as possible to provide a "safety net" before the Phenobarbital runs out completely.

Stopping Phenobarbital abruptly can potentially lead to life-threatening seizures. Please contact the clinic today so we can coordinate your pet's specific overlap and transition plan before your current supply of phenobarbital is empty.

We are currently working on securing phenobarbital through an alternative source, and will keep you posted once we have secured any stock🐾

Meet Helen!

"With nearly 10 years in the veterinary industry, caring for animals has always been at the heart of what I do. Animals have truly been a constant throughout my life.
I’m deeply passionate about animal welfare and spend much of my time volunteering in the space. At home, life is just as full — I have three dogs and four cats, along with a rotating crew of foster animals who always keep things interesting!
Before entering the veterinary field, I worked as a game ranger, and over the years I’ve even had two pet pigs. It’s safe to say my love for animals has shaped every part of my journey."

Welcome to the Team!
We are thrilled to announce that two wonderful new members have joined the False Bay Vet family this April! Please join us in giving a warm welcome to:

Helen Bastin: Helen joins us at our reception desk. Beyond her front-of-house expertise, she is also actively involved in animal welfare and volunteers most of her free time in that space. We are excited to tap into her wealth of knowledge and passion for animal health to better support our patients and their families.

Zinny Oliphant: Zinny brings an incredible 20 years of experience in the veterinary field. Having worked at a busy veterinary hospital, she brings a deep understanding of patient care and clinic dynamics that will be a massive asset to our team.

Both Helen and Zinny are looking forward to meeting all our clients and their furry companions. We are so happy to have such experienced, knowledgeable professionals on board to help us continue providing the best care possible.

Please make sure to say hello and give them a warm False Bay welcome when you next visit the clinic! Look out for future posts introducing each individual team member over the next couple of weeks :)

Last week, we said a bittersweet farewell Dr. Vivek Nana as he moves on to the next phase of his young veterinary career!

Vivek joined False Bay Vet following a year of community service and it has been a privilege to watch him grow from a newly graduated veterinarian into the confident, capable veterinarian he is today. Beyond his professional growth, Vivek has been a steadfast source of kindness and calm—not only for our team but for every client and patient he cared for.

He has been a dedicated teammate, a reliable professional, and a true friend to all of us at the clinic. While we will miss his presence in the practice, we are so proud of the journey he has taken.

We wish him nothing but the best as he embarks on the next chapter of his career. Thank you for everything, Vivek—we can’t wait to see what you achieve next! 🩺✨

Farewell to a Muizenberg Legend: Brian "Uncle Cuddles" Msodziwa 🐾

It is with heavy hearts (and a few wagging tails hanging low) that we say goodbye to a pillar of our clinic family, Brian Msodziwa, affectionately known by all as 'Uncle Cuddles'.

Brian has decided to begin a new chapter, moving back home to Zimbabwe with his three children. While we are so excited for his next adventure, his departure leaves a big pair of shoes to fill here in Muizenberg.

🛠️ More Than Just an Assistant
Brian wasn't just a friendly face; he was instrumental in building this clinic into what it is today. From the early days of renovations —where he wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty to make this space beautiful—to his gift for client relationships, Brian’s impact is everywhere you look.

❤️ The "Uncle Cuddles" Magic
If you’ve visited us, you’ve likely seen Brian in action. He earned his nickname for a reason! His gentle nature and dedicated spirit made him a favorite among our human clients and a hero to our furry patients. He had a way of calming the most nervous pups and making every pet feel safe.

Brian, thank you for your hard work, your kindness, and the heart you poured into this clinic. We will miss you dearly, and we know the pets of Muizenberg will too! 🇿🇼

Help us wish Brian a wonderful journey ahead! Please leave your favorite memories or well-wishes for him in the comments below. 👇
