The opposite of ignorance is understanding.

"Without understanding there is no room for true connection"

If you are wanting to develop true connection between yourself and your horses, I encourage you to get to know yourself too!

We all seem to answer the 'describe yourself in a sentence' with our name and our job title.. yes, we all do this! Why? Is it because we feel important/less-than with/without a title?

I have listed three 'introspective questions' for you to write down and read out to yourself - the aim here is to gain a deeper understanding of yourself.

(Please be kind to yourself, this is a safe space, no self-criticism allowed 😉 .

Introspective Sessions:

When do you feel most authentically 'you'?

(paint the picture for yourself, where are you, who are you with, what are you doing).

How do you deal with conflict?

(set the scene for yourself)

When things don't go as planned do you adjust your expectations for the day and find alternative solutions or do you get frustrated and walk away feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders?

So your horse has suddenly become moody, irritable or stubborn but nothing in their diet, environment or training program has changed..

Could tight fascia be the culprit?
Tightness in the fascia can be restrictive or even painful - leading to irritability, change in eating habits or even behavioural changes. ☝️

Maybe the next time you shrug your horse off as being “stubborn” you might stop and think along the lines of addressing restriction in your horse’s body first. 😉

We can have our differences on stabling or horses living out.. but one thing that can’t be argued is that horses are naturally better off in nature provided that they have space, appropriate shelter and quality grazing.

People are quick to lock horses up when the forecast is predicting rainfall - there is too much concern around horses slipping and potential injuries that could occur that we restrict their movement all together!

Is it fair on the horses to lock them up because of our personal worries or insecurities that are often-times pretty irrational?

Yes, accidents can happen but horses also know where their feet and limitations are.

One has to weigh up risk (injury) to reward (quality of life).

Connection Or Control

This is a topic worth hours and hours of conversation and revelations, I don’t have endless hours to blabber on but I do have something to say on this topic which I believe is worth sharing.

You don’t need spiritual gurus or ancient teachings to understand the fundamentals of connection.. you do however need a chest full of love, empathy, a willingness to learn and a sense of humbleness where you mess up.

Humans have this insane, unattainable need to feel good at something or reach a high levels of success.. sometimes at others expense..
In the horse world, this success often looks like dominance.

You’re a good rider if you can sit a buck and push your horse through it.
(BUT) is that really connection?

No.. it’s control!

I much prefer considering my mare in everything I ask and building on our solid foundations. After all, I don’t, can’t and won’t force her. We are partners in the saddle.

“If you want to be partners in the saddle, build trust from the ground because true connection comes where trust is built. Trust and connection go hand in hand”.

So are you a riding-partner or are you a riding-forcer?
