Important Product Recall Notice: RCL FOODS Recalls Pet Food Products Due to Salmonella Contamination Risk. RCL FOODS is voluntarily recalling certain dry pet food products manufactured in one of its facilities due to potential Salmonella contamination. This action follows the theft and resale of condemned products meant for destruction. Some contaminated batches may be sold in informal shops, and we urge pet owners to only purchase products from recognized retailers.

Kenya, 24 January 1961 — exactly 65 years ago, Elsa, the lioness made famous by Joy Adamson’s book Born Free, died in Kenya. Elsa was one of three orphaned lions whose mother was killed by George Adamson in self-defence. George Adamson, a pioneering wildlife conservationist, took in Elsa and her siblings, raising her in the wild and documenting her journey as she learned to survive independently. Through Adamson’s care, Elsa became the symbol of wildlife conservation and human-animal coexistence, inspiring a generation to rethink relationships with Africa’s predators.

Born Free, published in 1960, chronicled Elsa’s story and global impact, leading to widespread awareness about the threats faced by lions and other wildlife. Elsa’s life illustrated the challenges of reintroducing captive-raised animals to the wild, blending careful human support with the animals’ innate instincts. Her death marked the end of an iconic chapter in conservation history, yet her legacy persists through the Born Free Foundation, which continues to protect lions and other endangered species worldwide.

Today, 65 years later, Elsa remains one of the most recognized animals in conservation history — remembered not only for her story of survival but also for shaping how the world values and protects wild animals in Kenya and beyond.
