CONFIDENCE IS BUILT IN THE EVERYDAY MOMENTS 👌

One of the biggest misconceptions in riding is that confidence is built only in the show ring.

In reality, confidence is developed long before competition day.

It is built:
• in the quiet flatwork sessions
• in consistent routines
• in learning your horse
• in improving your reactions
• in choosing patience over pressure
• and in showing up, even on the less-than-perfect days

Strong riders do not become confident by avoiding challenges.
They become confident by creating enough positive, repeatable experiences that trust starts replacing doubt.

As riders, it is important to remember:
Progress is rarely linear.

Some days you feel strong and capable.
Other days require more focus, more support and more intentional riding.

Neither defines your ability.

Confidence also grows when riders stop attaching their self-worth to results.
A rail down does not erase good riding.
One difficult round does not undo months of progress.

The riders who last in this sport are the ones who learn to separate:
performance from identity.

Good horsemanship, emotional control, adaptability and consistency matter just as much as ribbons.

At shows, focus on:
• riding the first fence well
• creating rhythm
• making clear decisions
• staying connected to your horse
• and finishing each round having learnt something valuable

Pressure narrows riders.
Confidence allows riders to ride forward.

Your horse does not need perfection from you.
They need clarity, leadership and trust.

Keep building slowly.
Keep riding intentionally.
Keep focusing on progress over proving something.

That is where real confidence is created.

PART 2 — WORKING THROUGH EMOTIONAL & PHYSICAL FEAR AS A RIDER

Not every difficult feeling in the saddle needs to become a “fear.”
Sometimes your body is simply asking for support, preparation or recovery.

For riders, confidence comes from learning to understand the difference between:
• nerves
• pressure
• tension
• overwhelm
• and genuine fear

The answer is not to become tougher by ignoring your emotions.
The answer is to become more connected to them without letting them control your riding.

When emotions rise at shows:
• Focus on ONE job at a time
• Keep your body soft and breathing
• Stick to your routine
• Ride the plan, not the pressure
• Avoid comparing your journey to others around you

Your nervous system responds to what you repeatedly practise.
That means calm, positive experiences matter.

Confidence can be rebuilt through:
• Flatwork that creates control and rhythm
• Smaller tracks ridden well
• Clear goals instead of outcome obsession
• Good coaching
• Giving yourself permission to progress gradually

Physical fear also deserves respect.
Sometimes riders are mentally ready, but their body still holds tension after stress, injury, burnout or a fall. That is normal. Healing confidence takes patience.

The strongest riders are not the ones who never struggle.
They are the riders who continue showing up with honesty, consistency and kindness toward themselves and their horses.

Ride for progress. 💪
Ride for partnership.🤲
Ride for the love of improving.👌

Confidence follows consistency.

PART 1 — CONFIDENCE IS TRAINED, NOT GIVEN👌

Confidence in the saddle is not something you either “have” or “don’t have.”
It’s something you build — ride by ride, round by round, decision by decision.

Some days confidence feels natural.
Other days it feels quieter.
That doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re human and you’re growing.

For show jumpers, confidence is built through:
• Preparation over perfection
• Trusting your training
• Riding the horse you have TODAY
• Staying present instead of predicting mistakes
• Learning to reset after a bad round instead of carrying it into the next one

A confident rider is not fearless.
A confident rider knows how to keep going while staying calm, focused and fair to their horse.

The goal is never to force bravery.
The goal is to create trust:
Trust in your system.
Trust in your horse.
Trust in yourself.

Confidence grows when riders stop asking:
“What if it goes wrong?”
and start asking:
“What can I do well in this moment?”

Every good rider you admire has had rounds that shook them.
What makes them successful is that they kept rebuilding.

Small wins matter.
One relaxed round matters.
One better turn matters.
One deep breath before entering the arena matters.

Confidence is not built in one big moment.
It’s built quietly over time.

Some losses remind us just how much our coaches carry… often in silence. ❤️‍🩹

Behind every lesson, every round, every success — there is a coach giving their time, their energy, their heart.
Showing up for everyone else, even on the days they’re struggling themselves.

This post is for the coaches.
The ones who feel the pressure.
The responsibility.
The constant need to be “strong” for everyone around them.
You don’t have to carry it all alone.

This year, let’s change the way we support our coaches — not just as professionals, but as people.

How to Prevent Equestrian Burnout was written with you in mind.

To help you find balance, protect your energy, and build a career that doesn’t come at the cost of yourself.

Because you matter too. Always.

🔸️“This Is Not Just Being Tired”🔸️

You’re not lazy.
You’re not ungrateful.
And you definitely haven’t “fallen out of love” with horses.

But lately…
• You feel irritated before you even get to the yard
• Small mistakes make you disproportionately angry
• You dread riding horses you used to enjoy
• You’re exhausted no matter how much you sleep
• You feel guilty for wanting a day off
• And the pressure feels heavier than the passion

This is what Equestrian Burnout looks like.

And most riders only realise it once it’s already affecting their: – performance
– confidence
– horses
– coaching
– relationships
– and mental health

As a competitive rider, coach of 25 years, and someone who has studied Human Movement Science & Psychology… I wrote:
“How to Prevent Equestrian Burnout”
Because pushing through it doesn’t make you stronger.
It just makes you resent the sport you once loved.

🌟This book will help you:
✔ Recognise early burnout signs
✔ Manage emotional fatigue in high-pressure yards
✔ Create boundaries without guilt
✔ Ride with clarity instead of frustration
✔ Protect your passion long-term
So you can keep loving this sport — without losing yourself in it.

🌀YOUR FOCUS DETERMINES YOUR REALITY 🌀

"Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." – Henry Ford

Your mind is the MAP for your life. It spends every second of your day mapping out the best way for you to reach what you're after.

Focus on your goal, don't look in any direction but ahead.

What you focus on inevitably is the direction you will head. If you believe you will fail, not good enough or don't have what it takes, your mind will work to prove you right.

If you believe you have what it takes to succeed, again, your mind will look for every opportunity to assist you in doing so.

"Where focus goes, energy flows."

Learn to pay attention to your attention. Constantly evaluate the quality of your thoughts daily. And most importantly be aware of the fuel you are feeding your mind and your body. 👌

Cavaletti are where horses really learn about jumping because they teach the foundations of correct jumping without the stress or risk of big fences. 💪Here’s why they’re so powerful:

1. They develop true jumping technique
Cavaletti encourage the horse to:
▫️Lift the shoulders
▫️Use the back (round through the topline)
▫️Step under with the hind legs

This is the same body mechanics needed for jumping fences—just at a smaller, safer scale.

2. They teach the horse to think for itself
With a line of cavaletti, the horse has to:
▫️Judge distances
▫️Adjust stride length
▫️Find balance

Instead of the rider “placing” the horse, the horse learns self-carriage and decision-making, which is critical for real jumping.

3. They build rhythm and consistency
Good jumping comes from rhythm. Cavaletti:
▫️Create a metronome-like canter or trot
▫️Penalize rushing or laziness naturally
▫️Reward steady tempo

Horses learn that rhythm = comfort.

4. They strengthen the body safely
Because cavaletti are low:
▫️Joints and tendons are protected
▫️Muscles strengthen progressively
▫️Young or green horses can train correctly
▫️Strength comes before height.

5. They improve coordination and confidence
Cavaletti help horses learn:
▫️Where their feet are
▫️How to organize their body
▫️That jumping doesn’t hurt

Confidence built here carries over to bigger fences.

6. They reveal—and fix—training holes
Cavaletti expose issues like:
▫️Falling in or out
▫️Crookedness
▫️Uneven push from hind legs

And because everything is slow and small, these problems can be corrected without fear. ✅️

In short
Cavaletti teach the “how” of jumping, not just the “over.”
Big fences test jumping ability—but cavaletti create it.🏆

🐴 10 BENEFITS OF HORSE RIDING FOR CHILDREN 🐴

Horse riding is so much more than a sport — it’s a powerful tool for developing confident, capable children 🤍

✨ Builds Strength & Balance
Horse riding improves balance, motor coordination, hand-eye coordination, core strength and overall muscular development.

🧠 Enhances Cognitive & Learning Skills
Research shows riding can improve brain-based skills such as learning, memory and problem-solving. The horse’s movement stimulates the nervous system, supporting learning and focus.
💪 Boosts Confidence & Self-Belief

As children progress in their riding, they develop self-confidence, self-assurance and a strong sense of achievement.

🧘 Supports Mental Wellbeing
Riding benefits both body and mind — improving cardiovascular fitness while reducing stress and providing much-needed calm in an overstimulated world.

💛 Therapeutic & Emotional Growth
Horse riding offers deep psychological and emotional benefits, helping children regulate emotions and build resilience.

🎯 Teaches Focus, Discipline & Responsibility
Working with horses develops patience, discipline, focus and self-control — skills that carry over into everyday life.

🌱 Encourages Emotional Awareness
Horses are highly sensitive animals and mirror emotions, teaching children to manage fear, uncertainty and confidence.

🤝 Develops Social Skills
Riding helps children connect — with horses, instructors and peers — fostering communication, empathy and trust.

🌈 Helps Shy Children Flourish
Timid children often open up around horses. Ponies don’t judge, bully or pressure — they simply listen.

📚 Supports Early Education
Young riders learn through counting, rhythm, patterns and awareness — making horse riding a wonderful educational experience.

✨ Strong bodies. Calm minds. Confident children. ✨
