After the Anglo Boer War, the British Department of War purchased Grootfontein to establish a peacekeeping force from 1903 to 1910. About 7,000 troops from the Third Manchester Regiment, along with 3,000 women and children, created a community with schools, a church, and a hospital. Troops were disbanded in 1908, and control passed to the Union of South Africa in July 1910, leading to the establishment of the Grootfontein School of Agriculture in 1911 under Principal R W Thornton.

Today, young adults from across the country study at Grootfontein Agricultural College.

A handful of these students help at the events, assisting at water points, the bar, the merchandise store and other areas of the event.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Dwarsvlei Guest Farm and Function Venue, established in 1900 by the pioneering Henry Nourse, is a storied gem in South Africa's agricultural landscape. Born into naval lineage in 1857, Nourse became a renowned thoroughbred breeder, boasting one of the largest horse studs in the world, with 700 horses across his farms.
During the South African War, he transformed the homestead into a grand venue for military officers, complete with impressive dance floors. After Nourse's passing in 1944, the farm changed hands several times, ultimately falling into the capable hands of Alfred John van Lingen in 1963, who enhanced its legacy by focusing on sustainable farming practices.

Today, Dwarsvlei is not just a historical site; it has evolved into an exciting venue for cycling and running events, blending its rich past with a vibrant future. We look forward to hosting another event with Dwarsvlei in September!

Each business has an opportunity to book a Group Camp. Each camp will have the option of a Comfy Canvas Camp or an Expedition Glamping Camp. Camps vary in size, with 10 tents per camp. Each tent can be booked as a solo or double accommodation option.
