The tone of your voice carries many inflections, and the average dog owners are completely unaware of this.

Training with a whistle is a lot kinder on your dog and can result in faster reaction times from your dog.

So be kind to your dog and use a whistle, and steer clear of the gimmicky silent whistles, rather invest in a metal or plastic shepherds whistle or a two tone gun-dog whistle, and remember that consistency and using the same tone every time for an action ie Recall is key to setting your dog up for Success.

The Parallel Universe of Dogs.

Our dogs live in a sensory world entirely different from ours.
We think we experience reality, but the truth is, we only perceive our version of it.
How often have you debated the colour of an object? Or disagreed on how something smells or tastes? Human perception is fluid, subjective, and shaped by experience—now imagine how vastly different the world must be for dogs.
They might as well exist in a parallel universe.
That treat on the floor they can’t see.
That red ball in the green grass—so clear to us, yet invisible to them.
That cat in the bushes they seem to ignore—until the tiniest movement changes everything.
Dogs don’t see better or worse than us—they see differently. Their vision is adapted for dim light, making quick changes in brightness potentially disorienting. A dog struggling to transition between environments? Light conditions might be the cause.
Their acuity is estimated at 20/75—meaning that what a human sees at 75 feet, a dog sees at 20 feet. Yet their motion detection is extraordinary. While humans register movement at just 5%, dogs pick it up at 42%.
This could explain why they walk past a squirrel one moment, then suddenly lunge at something we haven’t even noticed.
Their depth perception surpasses ours, some studies suggest ultraviolet sensitivity, and remarkably, research even hints that dogs may align their bodies with the Earth’s magnetic field when they poo—which might explain their lengthy search for the perfect spot.
And then there’s sound.
Dogs hear nearly double the frequencies we do. They detect sounds four times farther than humans. That bark at "nothing"? That sudden startled reaction? It’s not nothing—they hear things we simply can’t.
Then, of course, there’s scent—perhaps the most misunderstood of all.
Smell is a world-builder for dogs. It’s how they navigate, communicate, and understand their surroundings. To restrict sniffing on walks is like blindfolding a human in front of a breathtaking landscape—a cruel disservice to their most powerful sense.
When we get frustrated with behaviors we don’t understand—scavenging, barking, hesitancy—we label them as bad, naughty, weird, or stupid.
But the reality is they don’t live in our world—they adapt to it.
Imagine how overwhelming human spaces must feel. Busy streets, unnatural chemical scents, chaotic sounds, restricted movement, expectations they never agreed to.
They see, hear, and smell things we will never experience, yet we often punish them for reacting to it.
So, when frustration rises—take a step back.
Instead of questioning their behaviour, question your own understanding.
Instead of restricting their instincts, respect the way they process the world.
Because if we truly listened, we’d realise—they have adapted for us far more than we have ever adapted for them.

One of the most powerful gifts we can offer a dog who has lived through trauma is autonomy—the freedom to make choices and the space to say no.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking structure and control are the antidotes to fear, but the truth is, many of these dogs have already lived lives where choice was taken from them. Pushing them into our timeline or expectations only reinforces that loss of agency.

Healing doesn’t come from obedience—it comes from trust. And trust is built in the quiet moments where we allow them to opt in, rather than force compliance.

Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is step back, slow down, and wait. Wait for the dog to come closer, to make eye contact, to engage on their terms. Autonomy isn’t about letting them run the show—it’s about creating a space where they feel safe enough to participate.

The progress might look different. It might be slower. But it will be real. And when that dog finally chooses connection—not out of fear or obligation, but because they feel safe—that’s where the magic happens.

Learn something new about your dog.
The philtrum is the vertical groove between the base of the nose and the border of a dog's upper lip, and it has a purpose. Every time a dog licks his lips, a bit of saliva stays in this groove and is drawn upwards due to capillary action. This keeps the dog's nose moist, if not wet, which enables the dog to capture scent particles from the air.

CHERISH YOUR DOG
Nobody tells you how quickly dogs age,
How one day you wake up and suddenly
their face is all white. Or how their eyes
start to seem more milky than before, or
how you have to call their name a few
more times than you used to.

Everyone says not to blink if you have
children or you'll miss out. But what about
the dog that was there with you before
your children were even thought of? The
dog that was by your side before you even
found love. Nobody tells you to cherish
every moment you have with them....

Cherish the dog. The one that's been there
by your side through every breakup
followed you as you bounced from home
to home. The one that sleeps in your bed
and keeps you from feeling lonely. Cherish
him because one day you'll take him on a
walk and he'll get tired before you and
you'll realise just how many years he's
been walking beside you....

This is an X-ray of a dog’s bent front leg. See that tiny white spec? That’s a microchip! It has migrated down the leg....far from where it was inserted, between the dog’s shoulders. This is actually quite common.....

When lost pets are scanned, the entire body SHOULD be scanned to catch any that have migrated. But, as an owner, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AT THEIR YEARLY VET EXAM, to ask for a quick scan to make sure that: (1) the chip is still working, (2) the location of the chip is good, and (3) that the chip info is correct.

Remember microchips save lives and reunite families with their pet.... just have it checked regularly!
