Why You Should Never Feed Your Dog Bones

It might seem harmless—and your dog may have handled it before—but feeding bones can have devastating consequences. In this case, a Labrador was rushed into surgery at Van Wijk Street Vet after a bone became lodged internally. Thankfully, our skilled surgical team was able to remove the obstruction and the dog made a full recovery.

But not all pets are this lucky.

Cooked bones in particular can splinter, causing internal bleeding, obstructions, choking, or even fatal injuries. Even raw bones, while sometimes marketed as natural treats, can break teeth, cause blockages, or become contaminated.

So don't risk it—bin it.

Rather opt for safe alternatives approved by vets, like dog chews and rubber toys. When in doubt, contact our practice—we stock trusted products and can guide you on the best, safest options for your pet.

Dog Survives Deadly Mamba Bite!

Meet Lily, a brave Weimaraner who recently survived a terrifying encounter with a mamba! Her vigilant owners saw the bite happen and rushed her straight to our hospital. On arrival, Lily couldn’t walk and was struggling to breathe—every second mattered.

Our dedicated team acted swiftly: securing her airway, administering life-saving antivenom, and providing immediate emergency care. Since Van Wijk Street Vet is not a 24-hour facility (and with no 24-hour vet hospital available in the Lowveld), we went the extra mile to ensure Lily’s safety.

Once stable, we set up remote monitoring with cameras in Lily’s kennel, allowing our vet to monitor her closely throughout the night via mobile phone, ensuring restful sleep while maintaining vigilant care.

Thankfully, Lily is now on the mend!

Important Reminder: Snakebite treatments are often very expensive due to the high cost of antivenom and after-hours care. We highly recommend looking into pet insurance to help manage these unforeseen costs. Feel free to contact us for advice on choosing the right pet insurance for your beloved pets.

Lily’s story reminds us all to stay alert during snake season. Keep your pets leashed, especially in rural or bushy areas, and seek veterinary care immediately if you suspect a snake bite.
