Easter is just around the corner, bringing with it the joy of family, friends, and of course, delicious chocolate treats! But before the Easter bunny hops into town, let's spread the word:
⚠️CHOCOLATE IS TOXIC TO DOGS AND SHOULD NEVER BE GIVEN TO THEM
The danger lies in two substances present in chocolate: theobromine and caffeine. Humans can metabolize these stimulants relatively efficiently, but dogs process them much more slowly. This slower metabolism allows the theobromine and caffeine to accumulate to toxic levels in their system, potentially leading to a range of distressing and even life-threatening symptoms.
Chocolate's danger to dogs depends on the type (dark/baking are worst), amount eaten, and the dog's size and sensitivity. Even small amounts can harm small dogs. Symptoms range from vomiting and hyperactivity to seizures and death. Easter's accessible chocolates require extra vigilance, so keep all treats out of reach, educate guests, and offer dog-friendly alternatives.
If ingestion is suspected, contact your vet immediately.
