FROM THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE'S DESK:
As we near the festive period, the committee has reflected deeply on the nature of service, leadership, and commitment within an organisation as vital as the SPCA.
Serving on this committee requires more than the giving of one’s time; it demands dedication, resilience, and a profound passion for animal welfare.
I remain immensely proud that every member of the Mafeking SPCA Management Committee embodies these qualities with integrity.
One truth stands out: no two committees are ever the same.
Each inherits its own operational realities, priorities, and challenges.
Each must respond to the issues of its time using the resources at its disposal. Comparisons between committee terms are not only misguided, but also they are unfair.
Armchair critics rarely appreciate the complexities of running an organisation of this nature.
While the NSPCA provides essential oversight, the daily, hands-on responsibility lies with societies like ours, which must respond to the realities on the ground.
The current committee has navigated significant business-efficiency challenges. Past experience has shown us that traditional physical fundraising events, despite requiring immense time, energy, and logistical planning, often yield minimal returns. Sustainability will depend on innovation, new, smarter fundraising models that respect both our capacity and our mission.
We have also had to critically re-evaluate our boarding facilities. While helpful to many community members, they do not form part of the core mandate of the Mafeking SPCA.
Going forward, we must reassess this service from an efficiency and sustainability perspective so that our limited resources strengthen, rather than strain, our primary mission of animal protection and welfare.
At the heart of this organisation is our staff.
Their commitment and loyalty are the backbone of everything we do. We acknowledge, with deep gratitude, the continued service and support of:
1. Miss Queen Seheri.
2. Miss Angie Vumizo, who has served since 2001 and will be retiring at the end of this month.
3. Miss Sophie Vumiso.
4. Mr. Thabo Seheri.
5. Mr Tshegofatso Tsokunya.
6. Miss Mpho Matlhabegoane, our diligent and studious Inspector, is currently serving notice and preparing to take up a new role at another SPCA society next year.
7. Senior Inspector Sparky Moseki, NSPCA Special Projects Unit, for her consistent professionalism, guidance, and operational support.
Their dedication continues to carry this society through difficult terrain and ensures that our mission remains active and dignified.
We further extend our sincere thanks to the partners whose support has kept our doors open and our lights on:
1. The National Lotteries Commission
2. Crail Fuel Services
3. Mafikeng Local Municipality
4. North-West University (NWU)
Your contributions and collaboration remain invaluable to our sustainability.
Looking Ahead:
As we prepare for the year ahead, we are proud to introduce a series of initiatives designed to generate traffic, deepen community engagement, and improve service delivery.
1. Launch of Our Fully Functional Website
Our new digital platform will allow community members to:
a. Report animal cruelty,
b. Browse animals available for adoption,
c. Seamlessly donate, and
d. Provide suggestions to improve customer experience.
This tool will modernise our operations and make the Mafikeng SPCA more accessible, responsive, and community-centred.
2. The Community Tea Initiative
“TEEKAN” is a warm, people-focused project designed to spark foot traffic by welcoming residents to enjoy tea “around the teapot.”
It creates an open, relaxed space for the people of Mahikeng to visit the SPCA, share insights, and guide us on how best we can serve them.
It is both an invitation and a bridge, bringing community and society closer together.
3. Guided School Tours & Animal Rights Education
We will soon be launching guided facility tours for primary school learners, with a strong focus on:
a. Animal rights education,
b. Responsible pet ownership,
c. Kindness and compassion, and
d. Early-stage animal welfare advocacy.
By reaching learners early, we help cultivate a more humane future for Mahikeng.
Ultimately, this society belongs to the people of Mafeking. Its sustainability depends on community ownership, not only financial contributions, but also the offering of time, skills, compassion, and shared responsibility.
To our staff and partners: thank you for your loyalty and your unwavering commitment.
To our community: we invite you to continue walking with us, not as observers, but as active partners in building a stronger, more compassionate Mafikeng SPCA.
Thank you.
