Donation alert:
Chris Maritz came through for us in the most practical and impactful way. They donated much-needed pet carriers to the Mafikeng SPCA, helping us improve how we transport rescued and surrendered animals safely and with dignity.
These carriers will immediately go into use for vet visits, emergency call-outs, and animal welfare operations across Mafikeng.

On behalf of the animals in our care, thank you, Chris.
Your generosity directly strengthens our ability to respond, rescue, and protect.

The Mafikeng SPCA Inspector responded to a complaint regarding a dog allegedly left to die on private property.
The inspector arrived to find the animal lying on the ground, unable to stand, severely emaciated, and extremely lethargic.
There were visible maggots on its ge***al area, and all indications suggested that the dog had been denied food, water, and basic care for an extended period.

The animal was immediately taken into SPCA custody and transported to a veterinarian for urgent assessment.
Following examination, the Vet confirmed that the dog’s condition was irreversible and that humane euthanasia was the most appropriate option to prevent further suffering.

The owner was not present during the inspection.
A case of animal cruelty will be opened against the owner in accordance with the Animals Protection Act.

🥳

On behalf of the entire Mafikeng SPCA family, our Management Committee, staff, volunteers, and, most importantly, the animals who depend on us every single day, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Haydn Davies.

Your extraordinary act of kindness in settling our entire Montego bill for the months of December and January has left us humbled beyond words.

Your contribution is more than a donation.
It is a lifeline.
A gesture that affirms our mission.
A reminder that compassion still leads.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Mr. Davies.
You have not just fed animals, you have restored hope, dignity, and stability to our work.

Mafikeng SPCA is sincerely grateful.

🙏

FROM THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE'S DESK:

As we near the festive period, the committee has reflected deeply on the nature of service, leadership, and commitment within an organisation as vital as the SPCA.
Serving on this committee requires more than the giving of one’s time; it demands dedication, resilience, and a profound passion for animal welfare.
I remain immensely proud that every member of the Mafeking SPCA Management Committee embodies these qualities with integrity.

One truth stands out: no two committees are ever the same.
Each inherits its own operational realities, priorities, and challenges.
Each must respond to the issues of its time using the resources at its disposal. Comparisons between committee terms are not only misguided, but also they are unfair.
Armchair critics rarely appreciate the complexities of running an organisation of this nature.
While the NSPCA provides essential oversight, the daily, hands-on responsibility lies with societies like ours, which must respond to the realities on the ground.

The current committee has navigated significant business-efficiency challenges. Past experience has shown us that traditional physical fundraising events, despite requiring immense time, energy, and logistical planning, often yield minimal returns. Sustainability will depend on innovation, new, smarter fundraising models that respect both our capacity and our mission.

We have also had to critically re-evaluate our boarding facilities. While helpful to many community members, they do not form part of the core mandate of the Mafeking SPCA.
Going forward, we must reassess this service from an efficiency and sustainability perspective so that our limited resources strengthen, rather than strain, our primary mission of animal protection and welfare.

At the heart of this organisation is our staff.
Their commitment and loyalty are the backbone of everything we do. We acknowledge, with deep gratitude, the continued service and support of:

1. Miss Queen Seheri.
2. Miss Angie Vumizo, who has served since 2001 and will be retiring at the end of this month.
3. Miss Sophie Vumiso.
4. Mr. Thabo Seheri.
5. Mr Tshegofatso Tsokunya.
6. Miss Mpho Matlhabegoane, our diligent and studious Inspector, is currently serving notice and preparing to take up a new role at another SPCA society next year.
7. Senior Inspector Sparky Moseki, NSPCA Special Projects Unit, for her consistent professionalism, guidance, and operational support.
Their dedication continues to carry this society through difficult terrain and ensures that our mission remains active and dignified.

We further extend our sincere thanks to the partners whose support has kept our doors open and our lights on:

1. The National Lotteries Commission
2. Crail Fuel Services
3. Mafikeng Local Municipality
4. North-West University (NWU)

Your contributions and collaboration remain invaluable to our sustainability.

Looking Ahead:
As we prepare for the year ahead, we are proud to introduce a series of initiatives designed to generate traffic, deepen community engagement, and improve service delivery.

1. Launch of Our Fully Functional Website
Our new digital platform will allow community members to:
a. Report animal cruelty,
b. Browse animals available for adoption,
c. Seamlessly donate, and
d. Provide suggestions to improve customer experience.

This tool will modernise our operations and make the Mafikeng SPCA more accessible, responsive, and community-centred.

2. The Community Tea Initiative
“TEEKAN” is a warm, people-focused project designed to spark foot traffic by welcoming residents to enjoy tea “around the teapot.”
It creates an open, relaxed space for the people of Mahikeng to visit the SPCA, share insights, and guide us on how best we can serve them.
It is both an invitation and a bridge, bringing community and society closer together.

3. Guided School Tours & Animal Rights Education
We will soon be launching guided facility tours for primary school learners, with a strong focus on:
a. Animal rights education,
b. Responsible pet ownership,
c. Kindness and compassion, and
d. Early-stage animal welfare advocacy.

By reaching learners early, we help cultivate a more humane future for Mahikeng.

Ultimately, this society belongs to the people of Mafeking. Its sustainability depends on community ownership, not only financial contributions, but also the offering of time, skills, compassion, and shared responsibility.

To our staff and partners: thank you for your loyalty and your unwavering commitment.
To our community: we invite you to continue walking with us, not as observers, but as active partners in building a stronger, more compassionate Mafikeng SPCA.

Thank you.

The Mafikeng SPCA, in partnership with the North-West State Veterinary Services, recently undertook a community rabies vaccination campaign and a festive-season animal care awareness programme in the Montshioa and Extension 38 areas.
During this outreach, our Society Inspector, Mpho Matlhabegoane, educated community members on responsible animal care during the festive period, informed them about the services offered by the Mafikeng SPCA, and distributed educational pamphlets foseason, informed them about the services offered by the Mafikeng SPCA, and distributed educational pamphlets to further raise awareness.
Members of the public were also encouraged to bring their animals for dipping and deworming services, which were offered at no charge.

At 12:07, 07 December 2025, our Mafikeng Society staff member, Ms Queen Seheri, attended to a complaint in Lonely Park Village where two (2) Vervet monkeys (diKgabo ka Setswana) were spotted hiding in the treetops.
Frightened, they moved further up the tallest trees in a neighbouring yard while our staff member dispersed the gathered crowd, made up mainly of children, and advised community members not to cause the animals any harm.
She further explained that, when the monkeys feel safe and ready, they will return to their natural home without intervention.

As the SPCA, we continue to urge members of the public to exercise patience and compassion when encountering wildlife in urban areas.
We remain committed to safeguarding the well-being of all animals and to educating communities on peaceful coexistence with indigenous species.
