Just got done removing this beauty's tapes, and what a wonderful mount this turned out to be!
I'm very happy with how this one came out, and I hope you guys like it just as much if not more than I do.

Please let me know how I did in the comments, and I'll be posting more projects again soon 😁

WORK IN PROGRESS πŸ˜…

This Saturday morning in the Overberg was a perfect day to taxidermy outside on the porch, so I've decided to do just that with this beautiful Spotted Eagle Owl,l, which had fallen victim to speeding cars on the side of the road a few months back.
It didn't come out too shabby, and I'm quite happy with the outcome of things.

Now, time to post and have a cup of coffee after some long hours of grooming done β˜•

I hope you guys enjoy this birdy as much as I do. Let me know how I did in the comments. I'd really appreciate any feedback. Thank you, and may God bless 😊

COMPLETED MOUNT βœ…

Today I did some final touch up paint work on this beautiful female Red Chested Cuckoo. It wasn't much but only a few strokes of custard yellow around the eye rings and feet. It came out beautifully. Now it's ready to head back home to its owner 🐦

CONCLUSION:
The cause of death for this beautiful bird was unknown, but from a little autopsy I was able to find that it had died from massive internal bleeding (either from an injury or caused by poisoning).
I was told that the Cuckoo was found weak and dying on somebody's porch. It passed away shortly after being found. Rest in the most beautiful peace ever little one ❀️✝️

WORK IN PROGRESS πŸ˜…

I got this beautiful Red Chested Cuckoo from a client about a week ago. It had died on someone's porch from an illness or injury and they decided to put it in the freezer for taxidermy. It was in very good condition and I decided to finish it today. It came out pretty neatly and will sit for another week or so before going home to its owner 🐦πŸ₯°

Let me know what you guys think of this one. I'll be posting again very soon, so stick around πŸ˜‰

Another small bird mount this month that I forgot to share πŸ™ƒ ...again 😩

This beautiful Cape Robin-Chat was also a victim found on the side of the road. I perched him/her on a small driftwood branch I picked up from the shore according to one of my client's requests. Now it's looking all happy and thoughtful again, which is exactly how I'd like this bird to be remembered 😊

I drew a little sketch for a reference as to pose this Spotted Eagle Owl, for there were no matches online whatsoever.
I wanted a specific pose like this, mostly because the right side of the face had a bit of a collision on the road. It was a challenge, but with much needed prayer and hope I pulled it off. It's not perfect, but at least I've got another happy customer who adores it! πŸ«£πŸ€—

Both of them were hit-and-run victims.

They're both so fluffy! πŸ€—β€οΈ

I thought I'd share this amazing rescue experience with you guys, so here it goes: 🌊🫑

Yesterday was a long adrenaline rush for me, because whilst walking on the beach I spotted this juvenile Cape Gannet on the shore. I never see them up close, let alone alive. They mostly show up on the beach already dead from illness, malnutrition, or injury. This one, however, had it rough, but was still alive and alert.

It didn't take long for me to realize that it had an embedded fishing lure stuck in it's beak and left wing, enabling it to fly or straighten its neck.

Being out there alone without a helping hand meant putting myself at risk of getting wet or even hurt in the process. But did that matter to me? Absolutely not! I did get wet, and I did get hurt.
But was worth it? Yes, 100%

I managed to find some good Samaritans on my way home to help me free the baby from his bandage with some much needed pair of pliers, and then took him home with me. I fed him some fresh fish, and then send him on his way to the Penguin sanctuary, where he'll be recovering nicely from all the trauma.

Look, I may be a taxidermist, but I have the most relentless compassion on any living creature that comes my way. And sometimes, I'll have to admit, when I've bonded with rescued animals I always refuse the option of taxidermizing them if they end up not making it. It's a different kind of feeling when working with individuals you once knew, saw alive, breathing, or gazing up at you.
Even as I work with birds I never saw alive, I get emotional just seeing the cause of their demise, and makes me want to end the process there all at once. I wouldn't wish death upon anyone or anything. I do taxidermy because I love seeing them look alive again, and preserving their beauty through the most honorable ways possible.

And for those animals that end up making it, sometimes make it back to me, to thank me in some way. Here's a little story that glorifies that...

There has been an owl flying around our neighborhood with chicks for years now, and four days ago I decided to befriend this cutie at last.

Mind you, we rescued and released an owl named Hiccup a few years back in the same spot, and I'm starting to think it could be her, because no other owl wants to come near me, except for her.
Our bond has grown over the past four days of continued feeding sessions and gaining the trust of one another. The outcome has been tremendous. I am so blessed to have made a lasting impact on her life, just as she did in mine πŸ₯ΉπŸ¦‰β€οΈ

I've not posted in a while, because I haven't been this busy in ages. I've got project after project coming in, and it's been both a challenge and blessing. I have three more birds to do these upcoming weeks, and smaller birds will also be on the to-do list for me. Here are some honorable mentions falling under the raptor category...

Spotted Eagle Owl #1
This owl was a hit-and-run victim, and died of starvation in the end before rescuers could help tend to it's needs.

Spotted Eagle Owl #2
This one suffered the same fate as the first owl, only it had died on impact.
(note, this owl was posed based on another taxidermied spotted eagle owl referenced off the internet, so don't get too excited if you recognized it πŸ˜‚)

There are more projects to come, and I'll be posting again soon. Thank you for your continued support πŸ™πŸ»β€οΈ

🐣 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

Oh, what a day... What a day! πŸ₯΅
NAMPO has got me working my butt off again, but I love it!

Today's project was another Spotted Eagle Owl, whom I've named "Alby."
I finished taxying him/her today, but had to take him home for some extra grooming work.
He/she was also another roadkill victim I picked up last year. It was so much fun working with this gorgeous owl β˜ΊοΈπŸ¦‰

I've had a lot of people asking me the same questions ten times every hour, and literally had to explain to them what it's like being a young self-taught taxidermist here in the Western Cape. My throat is actually sore after all that, but now I can finally take a quick break and go to sleep. Tomorrow is another day. See you guys later πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ˜
