🐘 Building an Elephant, From the Inside Out

An elephant mount is one of the most challenging projects in taxidermy. Due to its immense size and weight, the mannequin must be specially engineered and built hollow, allowing it to support the heavy hide while remaining practical to transport and install.

Once the elephant skin has been carefully tanned, it is fitted over the custom-built form and meticulously adjusted to recreate every wrinkle, contour, and feature. Any imperfections are expertly filled, textured, and painted by hand to ensure a seamless finish.

The result is far more than a mount—it's a tribute to one of Africa's most iconic animals, requiring countless hours of craftsmanship, precision, and attention to detail.

Ever wondered why there’s a hairdryer in a taxidermy studio?

Taxidermists use high-powered dryers (often called pet blowers) to bring a specimen back to life after washing. It’s not just about drying—it’s about detail, precision, and realism.

Here’s what’s really happening behind the scenes:
🦌 Fluffing fur & feathers – Restoring natural volume so nothing looks flat or matted
🪶 Grooming & shaping – Guiding hair direction and perfecting facial detail
💧 Faster drying – Speeding up the process after cleaning the hide
🌬 Dust removal – Blowing out debris from hard-to-reach areas
🧼 Safe cleaning – Gently maintaining older mounts without damaging them

Using cool or low heat, combined with careful brushing, ensures the hide stays intact while achieving that lifelike finish.

It might look simple—but this step is where mounts truly come to life.

Top 5 Mistakes That Ruin a Trophy (and How to Avoid Them)

A once-in-a-lifetime trophy can be lost in a matter of hours if not handled correctly.
We’ve seen it all – and unfortunately, many issues can’t be fixed later.

1. Incorrect Caping
Poor cuts, missing detail around the face, or damaged ears and lips can make a quality mount impossible.
Tip: If you're unsure, rather leave extra skin and let a professional handle the finer details.

2. Delayed Salting
Time is critical. Bacteria starts breaking down tissue almost immediately—especially in warm climates.
Tip: Salt the cape as soon as possible and ensure full coverage, especially around the ears, nose, and thick areas.

3. Poor Storage in the Field
Leaving a cape in a plastic bag or in the sun is one of the fastest ways to ruin it.
Tip: Keep it cool, dry, and shaded. Never seal fresh skins in plastic without proper treatment.

4. Improper Skull Handling
Boiling too aggressively, cutting into the skull, or losing teeth can permanently damage your trophy.
Tip: Clean gently – or better yet, leave it to professionals with the right tools and experience.

5. Lack of Proper Tagging & Documentation
Mix-ups happen more often than you think—especially when multiple animals are involved.
Tip: Clearly tag each trophy immediately with your name, species, and date.

The Bottom Line
You only get one chance to preserve your trophy correctly.
Proper field care makes all the difference between a world-class mount… and a lost opportunity.
