What looks good to us is good for your ants too:
- decoration increases surface area and allows your ants to walk around a little more
- you can hide food so that your ants need to actively search for it
- different material for your ants to walk on is stimulating for them and increases activity and health
- especially ants with good vision benefit from this because they now can hide if they want to and admire the decoration too

Who says that ants are incapable to appreciate something beautiful? As long as we don't know for sure, lets be fair and assume they can. :)

Camponotus cosmicus: The queen's gaster (abdomen) looks like it's covered with golden dust. Once the colony grows in number, worker's body size will increase too. Large workers will be just as beautiful as the queen.

Incipient Camponotus maculatus colony: Because they feel safe in their formicarium, workers moved the larvae and eggs to a slightly warmer spot outside their test tubes. The queen didn't want to miss out and joined.

Maintaining hygiene in your formicarium is very important, especially while your colony is still small: the smaller your colony, the more vulnerable it is towards loss of workers due to infection. In an incipient colony the death of a single worker can easily equal a reduction of colony size by 20%, if the colony only had 5 workers. To make cleaning easier, place fruits and other large sources of food on small dishes such as bottle lids or a small piece of wrapping film. This way you prevent fungi to grow from the fruit into the substrate in your formicarium.

Here you see workers of Camponotus maculatus feeding on an apple piece placed on a small piece of wrapping film: Happy ants!

An incipient Camponotus cosmicus colony decided to chill outside of its nest.
In past, most ant species were considered as sessile organisms, but recent research suggests that even established colonies of many species don't hesitate to leave their nest and build a new one, if it offers better conditions.
They "like to move it, move it" - just like us. 🥳

Problem: They escape easily from DIY-formicariums and you'll have them in your house.

If you would like to keep this fascinating ant, use our sealed formicariums: no oil, no powder, just glass. No ant gets out.

Queen discrimination in polygynous ants? Nepotism in ants? Do queens compete with each other? How about queen distribution in polygynous ant colonies? These and other questions can be your research project! By placing colonies under narrow glass plates it is possible to easily reveal some dynamics in ant colonies. The picture shows a polygynous Pheidole colony. Brood and some queens clearly separated. Which larvae pile and which queens will receive food first? By installing a video recording system, not only separation, but also material flow can be revealed easily. In comparison, the second picture shows a young monogynous Pheidole colony found by a single queen. Brood and queen are not separated, but rather all on one pile. Knowledge is primarily based on data collection. Don't be shy and collect some data; record your ants and draw conclusions! :)
