JCPZ Arbor celebrations are in full swing! 🌳

Joburg Zoo, in collaboration with Miss Earth, hosted approximately 500 learners from Orange Farm to educate them about the importance of trees and the need to protect them. As part of JCPZ's greening initiatives, 50 fruit trees and 100 indigenous trees were distributed to the learners.

Arbor Month 2025 is being celebrated under the national theme: “My Tree, My Oxygen. Plant Yours Today.” This campaign is part of the National Greening Programme led by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), which has set an ambitious goal of planting one million trees across South Africa in the 2024/25 season.

Happy International Primate Day! 🌍🐒

Today, we celebrate the incredible diversity of primates — from chimpanzees and gorillas in Africa to lemurs in Madagascar, and monkeys from South America to Southeast Asia. With around 200 species, primates are among our closest animal relatives, sharing traits like opposable thumbs and complex social behaviors.

Most primates thrive in tropical forests, swinging through trees and playing vital roles in their ecosystems. But many are under threat. Habitat destruction from mining, logging, and monoculture farming is pushing several species toward extinction.

Let’s raise awareness and take action to protect these intelligent and fascinating creatures. Every voice counts in the fight to preserve their future. 💚🌳

The history of the Zoo

In 1904, the land which the Johannesburg Zoo encompasses was donated to the people of the city of Johannesburg to be used for recreational use by the firm of the late Hermann Eckstein. Hermann Eckstein was involved in the development of the new mining town of Johannesburg. He had 3 million trees planted in an area which he christened Sachsenwald, now the suburb of Saxonwold.

The original animal collection consisted of one lion, one leopard, one giraffe, two Sable antelope bulls, one baboon, one genet, one pair of Rhesus monkeys, one pair of porcupines, and one Golden eagle.

Since then, the Johannesburg Zoo has undergone significant development and evolution over the years. Many facilities were built, for example, the hospital in 1936.

Happy International Wild Dog Day! 🌍🐾

Today we celebrate one of Africa’s most fascinating and endangered carnivores — the African Wild Dog (also known as the Painted Wolf 🐺🎨). With fewer than 6,000 left in the wild, every effort to protect them counts.

Known for their strong family bonds, teamwork, and incredible hunting skills, wild dogs play a vital role in maintaining balance in our ecosystems.

✨ Fun Fact: African wild dogs are among the most successful hunters in the animal kingdom, with a success rate of up to 80% — higher than lions!
