Important Community Notice: Increase in Malicious Dog Poisonings
Over the past two weeks, Allens Nek Veterinary Hospital has sadly seen a sharp rise in cases of malicious dog poisonings, specifically involving a substance known as carbamate, also called "two-step". These heartbreaking incidents are not only devastating for loving pet families, but they are often linked to criminal activity, with poisoned dogs being incapacitated so that burglars can gain access to properties.
We want to raise awareness in our community and help you protect your pets.
What is carbamate (2-step)?
Carbamate is a highly toxic pesticide that is illegally used to poison dogs. It is fast-acting and extremely dangerous, even in very small amounts, affecting the nervous system.
Clinical signs to watch for:
If your dog has ingested or come into contact with this poison, symptoms can develop rapidly and include:
Excessive salivation and drooling
Vomiting
Diarrhoea (sometimes with blood)
Muscle tremors or twitching
Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing
Weakness, staggering, or collapse
Seizures
Coma
What should you do if you suspect poisoning?
Act immediately. Time is critical.
Do not wait for all signs to develop. Even mild symptoms warrant urgent veterinary attention.
Bring your pet straight to the nearest veterinarian. If possible, bring along any suspected bait or packaging, but do not delay getting help.
How can you protect your pets?
Keep your dogs indoors at night when most poisonings occur.
Supervise them when they are in the garden.
Inspect your yard daily for any suspicious food items or objects that do not belong.
Report any suspicious activity in your area to local security and community watch groups.
At Allens Nek Veterinary Hospital, we understand that your pets are beloved family members. Our hearts go out to every family affected by these cruel acts. Please know that we are here to support you, provide guidance, and give your pets the best possible care in an emergency.
If you have any questions or need advice, do not hesitate to contact us directly. Letโs work together to keep our community, and our furry family, safe.
With compassion and care,
Dr Roelof Berg
