So in an effort to make this mushroom growing thing competitive, I have been running some experiments. The first is producing my own grain spawn from liquid culture, and this photo is from the test batch showing grey oyster mycelium colonizing the heck out of sorghum grains. If all goes well this jar will be split into another 20 similar jars which will in turn be used to colonize 20 large grow bags. It will reduce the cost of grain spawn to a fraction of current supplier and combined with the replacement bags I am using now might halve the production costs. Yay science!

Ground has broken on the new farm buildings. The idea is to build a prototype of insulated waterproof low cost (but still aesthetically pleasing) outdoor rooms suitable for modular expansion.

Step one is cement (the area is around 4 squares).

Step two will take place in a few weeks.

There will also be some news on grain spawn production and new varietals.

Long live the shroom!

Giant shroom anyone? No idea how it happened but this bag produced 3 insanely big mushrooms instead of the usual 20+ small ones. For scale, the bag at the back is the same size and has normal shrooms. Anyway this weekend I am starting a new mushroom line (shiitake) and will also be growing my own grain spawn for the first time. Will document it all here.

Fridge is now working, mostly. Had a fun time cleaning it, is now perfect on the inside. Outside will be more challenging, goal over Easter is to remove the glue from the sides which will be tricky as it's a double-sided tape mosaic.

Have a full shelf of first flush that might be ready for the market tomorrow, and about 50 bags in the cold room awaiting their turn so it's all happening.

So fridge project is delayed as some parts are missing (compressor, thermostat, gas, vent, mcguffin, leprechaun, fridge) - all on order for next week.

Instead, here is the first harvest for the market tomorrow, aiming at taking 3 kgs.

The combination of new bags and irregular humidifier and aircon times while setting up the outside grow room has resulted in, well, irregular shrooms. They look amazing but some have huge caps and others massive stems.

Project fridge has arrived! Needs much TLC, currently runs but actually makes things hotter. Plan is to fix cooling, make a new vent plate for bottom and then repaint and decorate. Display light works, so thinking of getting a custom sticker for the top.

Current fridge is overloaded with grain spawn and harvested mushies so this will do admirably once convinced to cool.
