We are the original South African missing pet specialists! First in SA with dogs and handlers who undergo strict and regular training.

We have a team of highly trained handlers with awesome highly trained search K9s Healthy Hound is the original, most successful and most experienced missing pet unit in Africa. Although based in Gauteng we have traveled to other provinces and have even had a callout to the Karoo as well as a callout to search fo

r a dog on Table Mountain! But, it’s not all about our K9 partners. At Healthy Hound, we have an amazing team who are there to help and guide you from the minute your pet has been found and we will not abandon you until your pet is found. We have been involved with the searching and rescue of some high profile dog and cat searches and have been in local and National news many times. But, it’s not all about the news making searches! Our little team started in August 2020 when K9 Zizou had a career change at 1yr old from anti poaching to missing pet search. From the beginning, she has excelled as a search dog, even in difficult circumstances. Subsequently we have trained up a bunch of other dogs and strive for continuous training for handlers and dogs alike. We do not rely on just one dog and will pick the right dog for the job. And we use other search methods too if they are needed. We like to take a holistic approach to searching. We also do not just search! We also perform rescues (including technical rescue) and do regular work in communities such as our snare walks and other initiatives. We have done some dramatic rescues and some amazing investigations which have resulted in great success. With a success rate that is comfortably over 85% and the fact that we also do rescues, it is the logical choice to contact us when a pet goes missing.

❤️ SOMETIMES THE BEST SEARCH NEVER HAPPENS… 🐾

Because sometimes, all a worried family needs is the right advice.

Little Alp, a handsome 2-year-old kitty from Cedar Creek Estate, disappeared after getting into a bit of a scuffle with another cat. As is so often the case, a frightened cat doesn’t necessarily go far—they simply find the safest hiding place they can.

Thankfully, Alp’s family contacted us early. We know Cedar Creek Estate well, and over the years we’ve learned where the naughty ones like to hide when they’ve had a fright.

Rather than sending out the search dogs, we created a detailed search map and guided the family through our Walk & Talk process. They followed the plan with incredible patience, calmness and trust.

And it worked.

Alp heard the familiar voices of his family, felt safe enough to come out of hiding, and made his way back home where he belongs. ❤️

This is exactly why we always encourage owners to contact us before panicking. Not every missing pet needs a full search, and if we believe a WhatsApp consultation is all that’s needed, we will tell you.

💔 Run Free, Luna 🌈🐾

Yesterday, James and Bandit were called to Sunninghill to help search for a beautiful cat named Luna. 🐈‍⬛

Bandit quickly located Luna’s exit point and followed her trail. Then came the indication we never want to see. 😭 Bandit indicated where she was and that she was no longer alive. 🥹 James checked on where he had indicated….

Sadly, Bandit was right. 😭😭😭

Based on our observations and research at the scene, it appears that Luna had most likely been struck by a vehicle the previous evening. 🥹💔

There are no words that make news like this easier. 💔

Luna’s family has now laid her to rest, and the heartbreaking task of explaining her loss to her little humans has begun. Losing a beloved pet is devastating for anyone, but trying to help a child understand why their best friend isn’t coming home is a pain no family should have to experience. 💔💔💔

There are no victories in a search like this, there is only the comfort of bringing answers home, even when those answers hurt.

Luna’s dad shared something with us that has stayed in our hearts: He told us that speeding through Sunninghill has become a real problem. Sadly, Luna is not the first pet to lose her life on these roads (or any road for that matter), and unless something changes, she won’t be the last.

So today, we’d like to ask every driver for one simple favour:

🚗 Please slow down in residential areas.

🐾 Be especially alert for cats, dogs and other animals near or on our roads.

❤️ And if you accidentally hit an animal, please don’t drive away. If it is safe to stop, please do, check on them. If they are still alive, get them to the nearest veterinarian or contact an animal welfare organisation immediately. Even a few minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

Every pet is someone’s family.

We cannot change what happened to Luna, but together as a community we can honour her memory by helping to prevent another family from experiencing the same heartbreak.

Run free, beautiful Luna. You were deeply loved, and you always will be. 🌈❤️

Colby went missing from Dowerglen, Edenvale, and his mom, Jenny, booked a search with us. While we prepared for deployment, she followed our Walk and Talk instructions exactly as we asked… and she absolutely nailed it!! 🥰

The next message 💬 we received was the one we love most:

🐾 WELCOME HOME DIOR! 🏡❤️

When James and Zizou were called out to help find missing cat Dior in Dainfern, they got straight to work.

After taking scent, Zizou quickly identified the route Dior had taken and soon located the exit point from the complex. From there, the trail led directly behind a nearby shopping centre where Dior had clearly been scavenging for food.

The search continued into a nearby veld where Zizou suddenly gave a strong proximity indication around a rocky outcrop. Rather than pushing in and risking frightening Dior further away, James made the decision to pull the search back and trust the process.

The plan was simple: give Dior the confidence to come out on his own.

Our client trusted James’ advice completely, following every instruction to the letter. That trust made all the difference.

Just a few hours later, the message we were hoping for arrived…

💚 “He’s here!” 💚

Another family reunited because they trusted the process, stayed patient, and let our experienced team do what they do best. Sometimes the hardest part of a search is knowing when not to chase.

We’re also thrilled to see our superstar Zizou back to her energetic self. Since changing her diet to Ideal Pet Food, her energy levels have been incredible. At 7 years old she’s behaving like an excited 3-year-old again, and it’s wonderful to see her loving every minute of being back out in the field doing what she does best.

Kilo9 Academy fans Fourways Review

It’s not always about finding missing pets. Sometimes it’s about protecting the communities they call home. ❤️🔥

Today, while we weren’t actively assisting one of our missing pet clients and were in a position to help, we responded to a veld fire in Gerhardsville as part of our volunteer fire team.

Working alongside SDS Protection fire team and fellow volunteers, we helped bring a significant fire under control. It was hot, hard work, but every person on that fire line shared the same goal: protecting lives, homes, animals and the environment.

Our first responsibility will always be to the families and pets who trust us. But when we’re available and our community needs an extra pair of hands, we’ll always do our best to answer the call.

Helping others has never been about recognition for us. It’s simply part of who we are and what Healthy Hound stands for.

A heartfelt thank you to every firefighter, volunteer and emergency responder who gave their time and energy today. We have immense respect for each and every one of you. 💚

(We even got to meet one of the dogs in the area we were protecting - his name is Pepsi and we helped calm him down as it was a bit overwhelming having the veld by his home on fire.)

🐾 WELCOME HOME, ZUKO! 🏡❤️

Every missing pet journey is different, and every family experiences it very differently.

When Zuko’s family first contacted us, they had lots of questions: They wanted to understand exactly how we work, why we recommended certain strategies and whether they were making the right decisions. That’s completely understandable!! When your beloved pet is missing, fear and uncertainty can make every decision feel overwhelming.

Our job isn’t just to search: Our job is to guide.

We took the time to answer every question, explain our recommendations and develop a strategy tailored specifically to Zuko’s case.

Our first recommendation was our Walk and Talk guidance, giving Zuko’s family practical steps to follow immediately. Axl initially searched and led us to an area but Zuko was not coming out so, Blue joined the search, he tracked confidently to a veld (just up from where Axl searched so it seems Zuko didn’t want what the lure offered and moved off) where we discovered signs of vagrants living in the area. That information changed the strategy completely. A new plan was put in place, and Zuko’s family followed it with dedication.

This morning, we received the message we had all been hoping for…

ZUKO IS HOME! ❤️🐈

His family sent us these words:

“Thank you so much for all your time and effort and the kindness, hope and comfort you gave to us over this time.”

“It wasn’t just your search but all the information you gave us, the kindness, patience and comfort you showed us that counted.”

Those words mean the world to us. 🥰

Our dogs help us gather vital information, but every successful outcome is a team effort between our handlers, our incredible K9s and families who trust the process and work alongside us.

Welcome home, Zuko. We couldn’t be happier for your family. ❤️🐾

Happy 4th Birthday to Blue for Monday and Peanut for yesterday! Hard to believe these 2 goofy ones are 4 already!! Blue is still crazy and adventurous and is the clown of the house while Peanut is more chilled, preferring cuddles with mom to doing much.

🐾 WELCOME HOME, REMY! 🐾

When 6-month-old Remy went missing from Lonehill, his family feared the worst. Having builders at the property may have startled the young kitty, causing him to hide or wander further than normal.

🏡❤️ WELCOME HOME MARTINI! ❤️🏡

Sometimes it’s the cats with the strongest routines that worry us the most when they suddenly disappear. 😰

Martini is a gorgeous semi-feral cat from Brakpan who, together with her mom, has been adopted by a wonderful family who gives them food, love and a safe place to call home. She lives life by the clock, so when she missed dinner, her human family knew something wasn’t right. After she missed several meals, they feared the worst and called Healthy Hound.

With concerns growing, Diane headed out with none other than Zizou – the first dog in Africa trained to search for missing pets.

Zizou got straight to work and took us towards a large enclosed veld… one occupied by some rather impressive ostriches and emus! As much as we love animals, there is a very good reason those birds are behind fences. They are not exactly known for welcoming visitors with open wings!

Instead of introducing ourselves to the feathered security team, Diane checked the surrounding area and found an adjacent veld where Zizou immediately picked up Martini’s scent.

With complete confidence, Zizou worked her way through the veld before indicating on an incredibly thick patch of vegetation. She was absolutely adamant that Martini was in there. Rather than charge in and risk pushing Martini even further away, we stepped back and put together a plan to bring her home instead.

Martini’s dad, Lorenzo, put that plan into action with the precision only a mechanical engineer could. And it worked perfectly.

Yesterday morning we received the best message we could have hoped for… a photo of Martini safely home with the simple words: “I can’t thank you enough.”

Whether Martini was birdwatching like her dad does or decided she was finally going to catch the world’s biggest bird, we’ll never know! What matters is that this beautiful girl is safely back where she belongs.

Welcome home, Martini. ❤️🐾
