This week is a reminder that every animal, whether companion, farm, wildlife or working animal, deserves compassion, protection and responsible care.

Veterinarians play a vital role in safeguarding animal welfare, advocating for ethical treatment, and ensuring that animals receive the care they need to live healthier, safer lives.

Let’s use this week to raise awareness, encourage kindness, and continue standing up for the wellbeing of all animals.

Sometimes a little adventure is on the cards. We were invited by to join a student group from Scotland who were studying veterinary medicine and vet nursing. They were doing a community day where they would be visiting 2 schools and wanted to include a rabies vaccination drive.

Dr Lee briefed the students on rabies and encouraged them not to be bitten while we were administering the rabies vaccinations.

We set out on a very windy day and enjoyed the welcome received at the schools where singing and dancing was shared. The students handed over some donations and then we preceded to drive around the communities bordering the Nambiti game reserve where they each had a chance to vaccinate dogs and cats from various households. It was amazing to see the number of cats living within households and very much part of the family. We did approximately 12 cats and 48 dogs.

We stayed over in the camp and were treated to a predator monitoring game drive in Nambiti game reserve before we headed back.

Another succesful steri clinic yesterday in Mpophomeni. 9 dogs and 5 cats were sterilised.

Thanks as usual go to for organising these monthly steri clinic's and to the staff and volunteers for assisting on the day.

We did our monthly steri clinic for this weekend where 29 cats were sterilised. Thanks to Sparkle Dental for offering your space for us to work in.

We finished early on Saturday so took a long walk along the Durban promenade which was so clean and being enjoyed by so many people. Kids cycling, skateboarding, people running, walking, fishing, walking dogs. We walked to the harbour and caught a glimpse of the cats that live there. A few years ago we did some clinics for at the Harbour and after the clinic watched them being released there. I wonder if these are still some of those cats? They looked very healthy and happy.

The reason we weren't at the clinic yesterday. We did a midweek steri clinic in Welbedacht, Chatsworth for where 10 dogs and 7 cats were sterilised. Most of the dogs were mummy dogs who had had many litters and some came with their puppies who were vaccinated and dewormed, and will be responsibly rehomed by Stray Paws. Well done Shabnam for all you do in Welbedacht.
