Zoute River

Zoute River Zoute River Garden Farm Zoute River Garden Farm is a working market garden, guest house and studio located in Hopefield, South Africa.

Our garden farm produces specialty heirloom vegetables, herbs and flowers for the local market, and we offer guest accommodation to visitors of the town and broader West Coast region. We also hold art residencies, writing retreats, workshops and pop-up events in our studio space. The property lies on popular Church Street — in a rural setting further down the river but within walking distance from

the town’s main attractions. The town itself is centrally located and an excellent base from which to explore the West Coast. Whether you're looking for a weekend getaway, are making a business stopover, or need some time and space to finish a thesis, paint, or take photographs of wildflowers, birds, or historical architecture, Zoute River provides the perfect venue and escape. London loading | WIP

The Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw owned a gorgeous writing shed on his property that he named "London". When he retreated there and didn't wish to be disturbed, he instructed his staff to tell visitors that he was "in London" or had "gone to London" for the day. Thus the fib was but a little white one.

We've been working on our own London for some time. It was hand built a few years ago and has seen several incarnations, including as garden and general work shed. But we needed more space for our retreats and events, so we started working on her some time ago -- with a few magical evenings spent there along the way, too. We'll post pictures as things progress.

Heritage Day | Veld scenes 24.09.22

For heritage day, we took a walk in the veld behind the garden farm.

This open space is on public land. One of our new projects is to document our findings there throughout the season, so that there's a record of all the species naturally occurring there.

It's also a way to keep one's eyes wide open, noticing things as they come and go with the changing of the seasons, and remembering to appreciate them.

Peas are such a joy to grow -- with their delicate flowers and tendrils and the way they seem to hold the annual promise of spring. These were sown in the darkest depths of our winter, but are now almost ready for harvest.

Sheep and mole were found on the same day in the eucalyptus forest, while the Delft shard and Waterman's bottle pushed up in the garden beds.

The ink pot makes for a good writerly talisman, for the superstitious or chronically blocked. Otherwise, there's always the memento mori.
