The Concept of Nine Tiles
I introduced the concept of Nine Tiles during an early morning home training session.
This was an exercise these dogs had never done before. Two older Pitbulls and a young, very energetic Dutch Shepherd puppy.
By mid-afternoon, I was sent a video of the dogs patiently waiting at an open gate. 🤩🥳
The Nine Tiles exercise is a leadership-based pattern I teach to everyday clients to restore calm and control at home.
It’s simple but powerful—
You create a physical “zone” at your doorway, defined by an invisible boundary (your nine tiles of space).
⸻
How It Works:
Your dogs learn that this zone belongs to you—it’s a no-interference space.
They can sit, lie down, or remain calmly behind this boundary while you:
• Greet guests
• Receive deliveries
• Move freely in and out without chaos and with safety
⸻
It’s About Respect, Not Restriction:
This isn’t about punishment—it’s about teaching:
• Spatial pressure
• Calm waiting
• Respect for personal space
• Safety
You’re guiding your dogs on how you want them to meet and greet people—without frantic competition for the door or gate.
⸻
Key Insight:
Boundaries create freedom and safety - calm starts with clear, consistent structure.
⸻
Nine Tiles Practice:
• Where in your home would the Nine Tiles practice make the biggest difference?
• How can you clearly define your “zone” at that spot (mentally or physically)?
• What calm behaviours would you like your dog to practice behind that boundary?
==================
Calm isn’t magic — it’s practiced. ✨
This simple exercise, The Nine Tiles, helps dogs learn patience, respect, and calmness at the door.
No yelling. No chaos. Just clear, consistent boundaries.
It’s not about restricting your dog. It’s about giving them the structure they need to relax and feel safe.
Boundaries create freedom.
Where could your “Nine Tiles” be at home?
