Did you know that elephant tusks are actually teeth? That's right! They are actually elongated insisor teeth.

Our incisor teeth are the 4 front in the middle of our smile. They are the teeth we use for biting into a juicy burger or crunchy carrot. We then grind the food up with our molars which are situated at the backs of our mouths. Unlike humans, elephants don't take "bites" of their food. They put whole branches straight into their mouth and start munching away with their large, flat molars.

Elephant tusks are made up of dentine which is a hard, dense, bony tissue. The whole tusk is wrapped in enamel. The hard dentine with the enamel component of the tusk collectively makes up "ivory".

Elephant tusks, like human teeth, have a pulp cavity inside that is filled with nerves and soft tissue. When an elephant breaks their tusk, this pulp cavity may be exposed and ellies can get toothache (which happens when we get holes in our teeth).

Elephants tusks can break during use, like when they push over trees/dig up roots or when they fight with other elephants or fend off predators.

It's a good thing we have an elephant dentist on call if one of our gentle giants needs some dental care.

Q&A: If elephant tusks are made of ivory... what are rhino horns made of? Are rhino horns the same as elephant tusks? Let us know in the comments below.

Have your “main character” moment at the Elephant Sanctuary – because after all, this experience is all about… these stunning creatures… and YOU!

At the Elephant Sanctuary, the well-being of our elephants comes first and the relationship we have with these elephants is built on trust, understanding and respect. Once we have made sure the elephants feel comfortable and secure in the space, we make room for you – our wonderful guests – because this moment is also about YOU! Spending time in the presence of African Elephants is a life-changing experience – for some, it’s almost spiritual, it moves them on a personal level. On an elephant tour, you will not only learn about the issues facing African Elephants across the country, you will learn about yourself.

Standing face to face with Africa’s largest mammal… makes you realize their own insignificance in the greater scheme of things and could teach you about humility. If you’ve had a negative experience with an animal before, drawing close to a wild animal who is gentle and patient could build your trust. If you are threatened by the size of these animals and choose to greet them anyway, you become braver…

You see, this experience is about appreciating the magnificence of South African wildlife but it is also about character development and in that moment, YOU ARE THE MAIN CHARACTER!

To spend time with the elephants, you need to book an elephant tour! On tour, you will be able to feed, walk alongside and interact with the elephants. Tours are suitable for all ages and all abilities – wheelchair and stroller friendly! The Elephant Sanctuary is open 7 days a week with a few elephant programs conducted every day. Tours are approximately 1,5 – 2 hours long and are suitable for all ages and abilities.

Book your main character moment today!
