AGE BASED TRAINING
Applies to horses and ponies.
The only way to learn if a horse has fully fused growth plates is by X-ray. Ask your vet to x-ray the back BEFORE starting ridden work.

Ages 1-2
Basic handling, hooves, brushing, leading, playing and bond building.

Ages 2-3
General handling, walking out in hand, meeting obstacles and machinery. Developing confidence away from the herd.

Age 4
Ground training such as long reining. Getting used to a saddle and bridle. Lean over, getting used to gentle weight on back. Ponying with older horses, increasing distance gradually.

Age 5
Backing walking out, light work on the straight in trot/canter, very basic pole work, gradually increasing with strength.

Age 6
Longer hacks, increased work in trot and canter introducing schooling and pole work including small jumps up to 70cm but not full courses.

Age 7
A strong horse ready to begin full training in a discipline.

All these classes for young horses putting pressure on producers and breeders need to stop!
Racing young horses needs to stop!

This is the most basic training knowledge. It's not just knowing how to train, it's WHEN.
