🐾 Important Health Notice: Kennel Cough Alert in Our Area
Dear Pet Parents,
We’d like to inform you that there has been a small outbreak of kennel cough (infectious bronchotracheitis) reported in the surrounding community. While most cases are mild, this respiratory illness is highly contagious and spreads quickly wherever dogs congregate—such as parks, grooming salons, training classes, and boarding facilities.
🩺 What Is Kennel Cough?
Kennel cough is caused by a combination of viruses and bacteria, most commonly Bordetella bronchiseptica. It affects the upper airways and can sound alarming, but is usually not life-threatening in healthy adult dogs.
⚠️ Symptoms to Watch For
- Persistent, dry, honking cough
- Gagging or retching
- Sneezing or nasal discharge
- Mild fever or lethargy
- Decreased appetite (in some cases)
If your dog is showing any of these signs, please contact us for advice or to schedule a check-up.
🔄 How It Spreads
Kennel cough is airborne and also spreads through shared items like water bowls, toys, and bedding. Dogs can transmit the illness even before symptoms appear.
💉 Prevention Is Key
We strongly recommend keeping your dog’s Bordetella vaccination up to date—especially if they:
- Attend daycare or training classes
- Visit grooming or boarding facilities
- Socialize regularly with other dogs
The vaccine doesn’t guarantee full immunity, but it significantly reduces the risk and severity of infection. Boosters are typically needed every 6–12 months depending on your dog’s lifestyle.
