Thanks to better care, dogs and cats are living longer than ever before—but with longevity comes the need for extra attention and support in their senior years.

It’s important to remember: age is not a disease. While senior pets may develop age-related conditions, many can still enjoy a happy, active life when their changing physical, mental, and medical needs are properly supported.

Regular veterinary check-ups are essential, as they allow us to detect potential health issues early—often before they become serious—helping your pet live a longer, healthier life.

Please note that we are closed on Sundays and Public Holidays. Should your pet require urgent care during these times, kindly refer to the emergency numbers provided below.

We look forward to seeing you and your pets tomorrow

Even though May is coming to an end, our focus on senior pets continues. Their needs don’t pause—and neither should the care we give them.

If your pet is 7 years or older, it may be time to switch to a diet tailored for ageing pets. For giant breeds, this transition should begin even earlier, from around 5 years of age.

A quality senior diet can make a meaningful difference—supporting mobility, protecting organ health, and improving overall wellbeing, helping your pet enjoy a healthier, more comfortable life.

Pop in and speak to one of our vets or reception team—we’re here to help you choose the very best nutrition for your pet. Senior pets deserve year-round care

Why adopting a senior pet is so rewarding:
Adopting a senior pet comes with many wonderful benefits—not only for you, but for the pet who gets a second chance at a loving home.

Senior pets are often calm, settled, and ready to fit right into your life, making them an ideal choice for many households.

Here’s why a senior pet might be perfect for you:
• Calm and easy-going companions – Less demanding and more relaxed than younger animals
• Known personality – What you see is what you get; their temperament is already well established
• Often already trained – Many are house-trained and familiar with basic routines
• Lower exercise needs – Ideal for quieter homes or less active owners
• Instant companionship – A loving bond can form immediately, without the puppy or kitten stage challenges
• Deep gratitude and loyalty – Senior pets often show incredible appreciation for a second chance
• A life saved – You’re giving a deserving animal comfort, dignity, and love in their later years

Adopting a senior pet is truly a compassionate choice that changes two lives—theirs and yours !

If you would like to adopt, please contact The Edenvale SPCA, Julie at Pet Au Pair, or Brenda at The Catshack and help give a senior pet the loving home they deserve

Recognising the signs of a senior dog!

It’s not always easy to know when your dog becomes a senior. Age estimates can be tricky—especially with mixed breeds or rescue dogs where their exact age may be unknown.

Instead, it’s helpful to watch for the signs of ageing as your dog enters their golden years.

Your senior dog may start to:
• Show stiffness, especially in the mornings (often linked to arthritis)
• Become less tolerant of energetic, younger dogs
• Develop greying around the muzzle
• Slow down and tire more easily

You may also notice signs of cognitive changes, such as:
• Disrupted sleep patterns
• Increased anxiety or restlessness, especially at night
• Reduced sense of smell
• Unusual evening or night-time behaviour

With the right care and support, senior pets can continue to live happy, active lives. The key is staying proactive with:
• Regular veterinary check-ups
• A balanced, age-appropriate diet
• Gentle, suitable exercise
• Ongoing mental stimulation

If you have any concerns or would like guidance on caring for your senior pet, please call us on (011) 974 5201 to book an appointment.

Pets are generally considered senior from around 7 years of age, but this can vary depending on their breed and size. Larger breeds tend to age faster and may reach their senior years sooner than smaller pets.

A quick guide:
• Cats: Around 7 years (some vets consider 10+ as senior)
• Small to medium dogs: 7–8 years
• Large dogs: Around 6–7 years
• Giant breeds: As early as 5–6 years

What influences ageing?
• Breed & size: Larger pets typically age faster and have shorter lifespans
• Overall health: Lifestyle, diet, and medical history all play a role
• Individual variation: Every pet ages at their own pace

Signs your pet may be entering their senior years:
• Slowing down, less activity, or difficulty with stairs and jumping
• Changes in eating or drinking habits
• Reduced grooming or difficulty reaching certain areas
• Accidents in the house or changes in toilet habits
• Behaviour changes like anxiety, irritability, or confusion
• Stiffness, reduced vision or hearing, and other age-related changes

Growing older is a natural part of life—but with the right care and attention, your pet can continue to enjoy their golden years in comfort and happiness

Growing older is not a disease—and our senior pets deserve the same comfort, care, and quality of life as ever. With the right support, they can continue to live happy, fulfilling lives.

Most older pets experience some level of arthritis. If your pet seems stiff, slower, or uncomfortable, a veterinary assessment is essential so that the right treatment plan for your pet can be implemented so that you can keep them pain-free.

Just like humans, dogs and cats can develop Alzheimer’s disease. Older cats may experience cognitive dysfunction (dementia), often from around 10 years of age. A vet visit is important to rule out other underlying causes.

Signs to watch for include:
* Getting disoriented or lost
* Less interest in play
* Changes in sleep patterns
* Staring into space
* Reduced appetite or thirst
* Toileting outside the litter box
* Increased vocalising, especially at night

Early recognition makes a big difference in managing these changes and keeping your pet comfortable.
