Hoe geniet ons as mense nie bietjie lekker biltong, 'n lekker tjoppie of 'n steak en stuk wors nie. Hoeveel te meer sal ons honde, wat van nature karnivore (vleisvreters ) is, nie smag na 'n lekker stukkie vleis nie. Sal dit nie sonde wees om hierdie honde kinders van ons hulle hele lewe lank te hou op 'n dieet van net mieliepap of ander stysels nie.

Want laat ons reguit wees, dit is wat die inhoud is van feitlik al die droe hondkosse (insluitend die sogenaamde premium hondekosse) - mielies, graan, miskien rys. "Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the second most common heart disease in dogs. In recent years, concerns have been raised regarding a potential association between grain-free dog foods and the development of DCM.

To evaluate this possible connection, this study randomized healthy adult dogs to one of four complete and balanced diets, each formulated with different ingredients, to assess their impact on cardiac function and overall health over an 18-month period.

The diets included:

A grain-free diet with potatoes and peas
A grain-inclusive diet with peas and pea fiber
A grain-inclusive diet without peas or potatoes
A grain-free diet with potatoes

No changes in cardiac function were observed between the grain-free and grain-inclusive groups, and taurine levels remained unaffected by diet.

These results show that foods designed to provide similar nutritional profiles—regardless of specific ingredients—supported heart health in healthy adult dogs. This study highlights the importance of balanced, high-quality nutrition in maintaining canine heart health."

For Nobles of Camelot the non negotiable primary concern is the BEST INTEREST OF DOGS. Yes, we also want to make a profit, but that is secondary – we shall never sell a product(s) just for the sake of selling a product, we shall ONLY market and sell that which we consider in the best interest of dogs. We do market and sell FARMINA, which we consider the best dry dog food available in South Africa, but even in their product range there are several products we refuse to market and sell (based on local and international feedback of certain problems experienced)

Directly flowing from this principle we shall also advise on balanced raw feeding and other pragmatic do it yourself in between options for those that require a cheaper alternative than FARMINA or raw feeding, but that will be more nutritious and better for dogs health than the usual commercial food.

Directly flowing from putting dogs interest first, we also have no choice but to disclose the extremely negative health impacts from the normal dry dog food diets.

We base our advice on “Canine and Feline Nutrition” by Case, Daristotle, Hayek, Raasch – the standard reference and instruction manual for put nutrition in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, considered the “Bible” for pet nutrition and the books and articles of internationally renowned pet nutritionists Prof Karen Becker, Dr Peter Tobias, Rodney Habib and Dr Judy Morgan. We also use a wide range of peer reviewed health and nutrition research that is applicable to dogs. Myself has practical firsthand experience as former registered breeder and owner and also have a large international network of friends that are breeders, dog owners and vets that give me feedback.

Sorry, but we place zero to minimal value to the writings of “researchers” employed by pet food companies, they write what their employers want them to write and what they are paid to write, it is not independent research. I think at best it can described as “advertising”, methinks it is more a spreading of deliberate falsehoods to promote the dog foods companies interests.

DOGS ARE PRIMARILY CARNIVORES
Our premise, backed by science, is that dogs are PRIMARILY CARNIVORES. They are not so fully carnivores as for instance cats, as they have historically also eaten berries, fruits, even some grass. And yes as they have been domesticated, they have to a lesser or greater extent scavenged. But still primarily carnivores as indicated by shorter intestine that cannot properly digest things like grain and their total lack of salivary amylase to enable them to digest starches and high acidic ph that easily digest meat and fats.

According to numerous peer reviewed research articles it has also been shown that dogs on a predominantly MEAT based diet has up to 25% higher life expectancy than dogs on a grain based kibble diet and also much better health.

Therefore a balanced raw diet that contains all essential nutrients is a good option. We distribute FARMINA as alternative option for those that prefer not to feed raw or not able to feed fully nutritionally balanced raw diet. FARMINA is 64% - 80% meat and 90% -98% of protein from meat

Have you ever caught yourself adding sprouted seeds to your dinner and thought, 'can I share this with my dog?' 🐶 (the answer is yes!)

I wrote a blog about the do's and don'ts when it comes to feeding veggies to your dogs, including the warming and cooling aspects to consider. BTW, for those of you who like numbers, splitting the veggies into leafy and non-leafy and keeping their balance will work. However, this is not the only correct ratio. Be flexible and creative similar to your healthy diet.

NO KILL !!!!!

Germany's Animal Welfare Act prohibits killing any vertebrate animal without legitimate reasons like serious illness, uncontrollable suffering, or real danger to public safety.

This means convenience euthanasia, killing healthy or treatable animals due to lack of space, funding, or adoption prospects, is strictly forbidden in all shelters nationwide.

Every animal's life is legally protected unless a veterinarian verifies and documents that euthanasia is truly necessary for medical or safety reasons.

As a result, German shelters function as practical no kill sanctuaries, legally obligated to care for every animal admitted, often for months or years, until a suitable home is found.

This approach has fostered a culture of responsibility and compassion, with shelters investing heavily in rehabilitation, rehoming, and lifelong care.

Germany's model is now recognized worldwide as a benchmark in progressive animal welfare, proving that clear legal protections and community support can virtually eliminate routine shelter euthanasia.

Sometimes the most revolutionary act is simply making compassion mandatory instead of optional.
