Snake Awareness in Overstrand, Western Cape
As the warmer months roll in, it’s important to stay aware of our slithery neighbors here in Overstrand!
The beautiful Western Cape is home to a variety of snake species, some of which are venomous. Here are a few tips to keep yourself and your loved ones safe:
1. Know the Local Snakes:
Overstrand is home to venomous species like the Cape Cobra, Puff Adder, Boomslang & Rinkhals. Familiarize yourself with their appearance and behavior.
2. Stay on Paths:
When hiking or walking in nature reserves, always stick to marked paths and avoid tall grass.
3. Keep Your Distance:
If you spot a snake, stay calm and give it space. Do not attempt to approach or handle it.
4. Educate Your Family:
Make sure your children understand the importance of staying safe around wildlife. Teach them to be cautious when playing outdoors & not to handle any snake they may encounter.
5. Call for Help:
If you encounter a snake in your garden or home, contact a local snake rescue or CapeNature.
