ā„ļøšŸ„¶ Brrr! It’s FREEZING in Johannesburg! šŸ„¶ā„ļø
The temperatures have dropped drastically, and just like us, our pets feel the chill too! At Family Vet Fourways we care deeply about keeping your furry family members safe and warm.

Here are some essential winter tips to protect your pets during this icy weather:

🧣 Keep them indoors – Bring pets inside during the coldest parts of the day and especially overnight.
šŸ›ļø Warm bedding is a must – Elevate beds off cold floors and add extra blankets for warmth.
🧄 Dress them up – Small breeds, elderly pets, and short-haired dogs benefit from a cosy jersey or jacket.
🚿 Avoid cold baths – Skip outdoor washes and use warm water with quick drying if a bath is necessary.
šŸ”„ Watch for heat hazards – Keep pets away from heaters and open flames.
🄶 Know the signs of cold stress – Shivering, whining, anxiety, or reluctance to move could signal they’re too cold.

If you’re unsure whether your pet is coping well in this cold, give us a call or pop in for a check-up. Let’s keep those tails wagging, even in winter! šŸ¾šŸ’™

Cold weather alert, Fourways pet parents!
The chill has set in, and our pets need a little extra TLC to stay warm and healthy.

Here’s how you can help your pets beat the cold:
• Bring them inside where it’s warm and dry – especially overnight.
• Layer up: Small or short-haired breeds may need a pet jersey for extra warmth.
• Comfort counts: Make sure bedding is cozy, elevated, and out of cold draughts.
• Stay active: Gentle indoor play can help keep those joints moving, especially in older pets.

Winter can be tough, but with a little care, your furry family members will stay happy and healthy. If you’re worried about your pet in the cold, our team is just a call away!

With warmth,
The Family Vet Fourways Team

Is Your Pet Slowing Down? It Might Be Arthritis.

Arthritis isn’t just a human problem—our beloved dogs and cats can suffer too, especially as they age. If your pet is showing signs like stiffness, limping, reluctance to jump or play, or changes in behavior, they could be in pain from joint inflammation.

In Johannesburg’s fluctuating climate, arthritis symptoms can worsen during cooler months. The good news? There are effective treatments and management strategies available—from pain relief and joint supplements to diet and lifestyle adjustments.

Let’s keep your furry family members comfortable and mobile. Book a consultation with Family Vet Fourways and let’s talk about how we can help your pet live their best life—pain-free.

Testimonial:
ā€œBefore treatment, Bella struggled to get up in the morning and didn’t want to go for walks. After her arthritis care plan at Family Vet Fourways, she’s back to chasing birds in the garden like her old self! We’re so grateful for the care she received.ā€

Yesterday our patient got into a fight with his bige brother and unfortunately suffered a fracture through his mandible on the left side due to the bite wound.

We quickly jumped into action and stabilised him as he was in shock. He recovered well and today we did surgery on him to repair the fracture.

Dr Dyllan placed a 4-hole titanium plate and 4 screws to stabilise the fracture and provide good stability across the fracture line. Good stability was reached and he should make a good recovery from the whole ordeal.

Please note!
Its Thunderstorms and Lightning season as well as some other loud and bright dates coming up. ā›ˆ
Thunder is the sound caused by lightning. Depending upon the distance from and nature of the lightning, it can range from a long, low rumble to a sudden, loud crack.
Near the source, the sound pressure level of thunder is usually 165 to 180 dB, but can exceed 200 dB in some cases.
The sudden increase in temperature and hence pressure caused by the lightning produces rapid expansion of the air in the path of a lightning bolt. In turn, this expansion of air creates a sonic shock wave, often referred to as a "thunderclap" or "peal of thunder".
The shock wave in thunder is sufficient to cause property damage and injury, such as internal contusion, to individuals nearby. Thunder can rupture the eardrums of people nearby, leading to permanently impaired hearing. Even if not, it can lead to temporary deafness.
The scientific study of thunder is known as Brontology and the irrational fear (phobia) of thunder is called brontophobia.
Dogs can hear frequencies up to about 65,000 Hz, while humans top out at around 20,000 Hz.
A dog's ear shape helps to funnel sound more efficiently than the flatter human ear, aiding in sound localization.
Humans have a better ability to detect subtle differences in volume, while dogs excel in hearing sounds at great distances.
Each rabbit ear can rotate separately to precisely pinpoint the direction. The rabbit hearing range is between 360 Hz and 42, 000 Hz
Cats can hear sounds made from 1000m away, while humans can only hear from around 300m.
Cats' hearing is generally four to five times better than humans.
They can hear a wider range of frequencies, from 55 Hz to 79 kHz, compared to the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range for humans.
Cats' outer ears amplify sounds and help them locate the sound's source.
This can lead to fear and anxiety in your pets as they can hear far more than we are able to.
Please come in a d chat to us about these and what we can do to help your animals feel more relaxed and calmer in these times of severe stress.
There are many ways to help them have a happy and healthy life.
Please ensure that they are kept indoors, safe and dry during these times. They will love you for it.
