Hermit crabs are curious, expressive, and endlessly entertaining with their climbing and exploring and continuous interaction.
Why hermit crabs matter in your reef tank. They are exceptional scavengers. Finding anything from flakes and pellets to frozen foods before it rots, causing spikes. Many species pick and graze on film, hair, and micro algae on rocks and glass. They keep the top layer of substrate moving, preventing detritus buildup and helping oxygenate the bed. They clean the tight spaces and crevices that the snails and urchins can't reach.
They are tiny janitors that never clock out.
