Across many aquaculture systems, health management remains largely reactive, with action often taken only after mortality appears or production losses become unavoidable.
But what if we could identify risks earlier?

Early detection, routine monitoring, strong biosecurity, veterinary oversight, and strategic health planning all play an important role in reducing disease risks and building more resilient aquaculture systems.

To explore this topic further, I recently developed a 4-part video series on preventative veterinary health management in aquaculture and have now published a new blog article that brings these ideas together.

Disease prevention starts with monitoring.

This is the final video in our "The Role of Preventative Veterinary Health Management in Modern Aquaculture" series.

By the time aquatic animals begin showing obvious signs of disease, valuable opportunities for early intervention may already have been missed. Regular monitoring of animal health, behaviour, water quality, mortality trends, and production performance can help farmers identify emerging problems and take action before losses become significant.

Preventative health management is not just about avoiding diseaseโ€”it is about supporting healthier animals, improving welfare, strengthening farm performance, and building more resilient aquaculture systems.

๐Ÿ“Š AQUACULTURE FARMERS POLL

Aquaculture farmers and farm managers: if you could anonymously compare your farm against other successful aquaculture farms, what would you most like to benchmark?

I am an aquatic veterinarian (Aquaglobal Veterinary Consulting) and interested in understanding which performance areas fish and shrimp farmers consider most valuable for comparison and learning.

Feel free to comment on other areas you would find valuable to benchmark.

๐ŸŒŠ Survival rate
๐ŸŒŠ Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR)
๐ŸŒŠ Growth rate
๐ŸŒŠ Water quality management
๐ŸŒŠ Disease occurrence
๐ŸŒŠ Animal welfare indicators

๐ŸŸ AI is rapidly changing the future of aquaculture but technology alone cannot solve the industryโ€™s biological and welfare challenges.

In our latest article, we explore how AI-driven monitoring systems may support:
๐Ÿ”น early disease detection,
๐Ÿ”น animal welfare,
๐Ÿ”น behavioural monitoring,
๐Ÿ”น and preventative veterinary healthcare.

An exciting and rapidly evolving space within modern aquaculture.

๐ŸŸ Fish rarely โ€œsuddenlyโ€ start dying.

In many aquaculture systems, the real problem actually started weeks earlier.

A slight oxygen fluctuation.
A small feeding inconsistency.
Gradual environmental stress.
Subtle behavioural changes nobody thought much about.

Then suddenly:
โš ๏ธ Growth drops
โš ๏ธ Feed conversion worsens
โš ๏ธ Disease appears
โš ๏ธ Mortality spikes
โš ๏ธ Financial losses follow

By the time farms react, the system has often already been under pressure for a long time.

This is one of the biggest hidden challenges in aquaculture:
๐Ÿ“‰ Mortality is usually the LAST visible sign โ€” not the first.

The farms that perform best are often not the farms that respond fastest during crisesโ€ฆ

They are the farms that recognise stress earliest.

I recently wrote about this pattern, what I call the โ€œFarm Loss Escalation Cycleโ€, and why preventative management is critical.

In our ASK THE AQUATIC VET blog series, I explore a common question:

Why does high stocking density increase disease risk?

If youโ€™re running an aquaculture farm and dealing with:

โ€ข Sudden mortality spikes
โ€ข Slow or inconsistent growth
โ€ข Recurring disease

๐Ÿ‘‰ It may not be a disease problem. It may be a stocking density problem.

High stocking density doesnโ€™t just mean more fish.

It means:
โ†’ More stress
โ†’ Poorer water quality
โ†’ Faster disease spread

And over time, this puts pressure on your systemโ€”until performance starts to drop.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The key question is not:
โ€œHow many fish can I stock?โ€ but โ€œCan my system support this density consistently?โ€

Because disease risk is determined by system capacityโ€”not just stocking density.

If youโ€™re seeing these signs, your system may already be under pressure.

Most farms act when losses are already visible.

But by then, the system has already failed in some way.

I help farms identify problems early โ€” before they escalate.
