Rabies Report KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, 20 September – 07 November 2025

KwaZulu Natal
*HUMAN*
Umlazi, Ethekwini Metro

We have lost 3 people to rabies in KZN this year. This is preventable through rabies awareness and seeking prompt post exposure treatment.

The following animals have had confirmed rabies; please ensure your pets are vaccinated. It is a legal requirement due to the extreme health risk of unvaccinated pets even in walled gardens; the vaccine is readily available for free. Keep your rabies certificate safe so you can easily access it if requested.

1. Bushbuck, Hillcrest, Ethekwini Metro
2. Canine, Ezimbokodweni, Ethekwini Metro
3. Canine, KwaNyuswa, Ethekwini Metro
4. Canine, Kloof, Ethekwini Metro
5. Canine, Umlazi, Ethekwini Metro
6. Canine, Molweni, Ethekwini Metro
7. Canine, Molweni, Ethekwini Metro
8. Canine, Empumelelo, Umsunduzi, Umgungundlovu District
9. Mongoose, Mt Currie, Kokstad, Harry Gwala District

What to do in the event of a bite OR SCRATCH from ANY MAMMAL that could have rabies:
1. Wash any scratches or wounds with running water and soap for 10 minutes.
2. Get to a doctor or hospital for a course of 4 vaccinations. If the doctor or clinic is unsure of the treatment protocol, there is a rabies hotline for health professionals that they can call. If you have a bite or scratch with broken skin, and are previously unvaccinated, it is essential to get injections of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) into the wound in addition to vaccine.
YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO REQUEST AN AMBULANCE IF YOU NEED TRANSPORT

To all the Furball supporters!
The Woolworths MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet has been changed, and we need your help! The program has been renamed to Woolworths Difference and now requires all supporters to update their beneficiary list yearly otherwise their beneficiaries will automatically be removed!
So, what does this mean? If you do not choose Furballs as your beneficiary of choice every year, then Woolworths will not donate 1% of your purchases to Furballs on your behalf. (Remember you don't pay extra, Woolworths makes the donation)

We would like to kindly request all supporters to please go onto your Woolworths application and do the following steps:
Step 1: Click on the Loyalty tab at the bottom
Step 2: Scroll down and click on Causes (under the Explore Loyalty heading)
Step 3: Click on the Add Cause button
Step 4: Type FURBALL in the Search field and click on Feeding the Furballs to choose us as your beneficiary.
