Something a little different arriving at KOI Select tomorrow. We have a shipment of Banana Koi, around 10–15 cm, coming in from Indonesia.
Banana Koi are unusual because, unlike the traditional Japanese varieties we normally see, they are an Indonesian strain of carp, known locally as Domas, with a long history around the Sukabumi area of West Java. Their standout feature is the distinctive yellow/gold colour, black markings and unusually large scales. They’ve also been shown competitively in Indonesia and have won their classes. Interestingly, Japanese judges have referred to them as Kin Kabuto, while elsewhere in Asia the name Banana Koi took hold and ultimately stuck.
They arrive tomorrow but will first need to go through our quarantine process before being made available. Something completely different for us, and I’m looking forward to seeing how these little guys develop.
