🚨 African Horse Sickness - Now is the time to vaccinate!

According to the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, AHS is a notifiable viral disease "that affects all equines and is often fatal".

The low-risk season, which runs from 1 June - 31 October, is when vaccinations should be administered. 🐎

Out of all the 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 that sheep are susceptible to, 𝐏𝐮𝐥𝐩𝐲 𝐊𝐢𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 (𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘋) is the most common. It is a serious threat to unvaccinated sheep and almost all cases are fatal despite treatment.

𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐬, 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦. 🐑

Lambs and previously unvaccinated adult sheep are given 2 doses, 6 weeks apart, followed by annual vaccination of vaccine containing the required strains of 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮. Ewes should receive a booster 2-6 weeks before lambing to ensure passive protection of the lambs through colostrum. Lambs can be vaccinated from 2 weeks old, regardless of the dam's status.

Other diseases caused by clostridia in sheep (as well as cattle) are:
- Enterotoxaemia, haemorrhagic enteritis (𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘈)
- Necrotic enteritis (𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘊)
- Enterotoxaemia, pulpy kidney (𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘋)
- Blackleg, black quarter (𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘶𝘷𝘰𝘦𝘪)
- Infectious necrotic hepatitis (𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘺𝘪 𝘉)
- Malignant oedema (𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘮)
-Tetanus, lockjaw (𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘵𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘪)

Another threat to consider is 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴 in sheep and goats. The current changes in 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐬, 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐩𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚.
