Hamsters and gerbils are natural burrowing animals. In the wild, they spend much of their time digging tunnels and creating underground sleeping areas, food-storage chambers and secure nesting spaces. Providing deep bedding allows them to carry out these important natural behaviours inside their enclosure.

A thin scattering of bedding may absorb waste, but it does not give them enough depth to build proper tunnels. For good welfare, aim to provide a generously filled burrowing area of approximately 30 cm deep and 30cm wide. Research involving Syrian hamsters found clear welfare benefits from deeper bedding, and a depth of around 30 cm is widely recommended for meaningful burrowing. Gerbil welfare guidance similarly recommends approximately 20–30 cm of substrate so they can dig and construct tunnels.

Deep bedding helps your hamster or gerbil:

When adding the bedding, gently press it down in layers so that it has enough structure to support tunnels, while still remaining soft enough for digging. For gerbils, adding suitable hay or other safe structural material between the layers can also help their tunnel systems hold their shape.

Give them more than somewhere to stand, give them somewhere to dig, build, hide and feel at home. 🐹🌿

THIS NEEDS TO BE BANNED

Please do not support or promote this as animal enrichment. This type of rolling wire orb can cause serious harm to rabbits, chickens and other animals.

• Feet, toes, legs, wings, jaws, heads or necks can become trapped in the gaps.

• If the orb moves while an animal is caught, it can cause painful twisting injuries, sprains, dislocations, fractures and spinal damage.

• Rabbits have powerful hind legs but delicate skeletons and spines. Panicking or kicking inside this structure could cause severe injury.

• Chickens can damage their toes, feet, legs and wings while trying to balance against unstable wire.

• Animals cannot properly control, steer or stop the orb, increasing the risk of falls, collisions and rolling into roads, pools, slopes or other hazards.

• They cannot escape predators, heat, bad weather or anything frightening them.

• It prevents normal behaviour such as running, hiding, stretching, digging, scratching and foraging.
This is not enrichment. It is confinement inside a moving wire cage that can cause fear, panic and serious physical injury.

What people do to make money at the expense of animals is ao disheartening.

NEXT GEN ORB please do better and throw this business out.

Please share this far and wide. This kind of behaviour is becoming far too common within the SPCA and it needs to be investigated transparently.

The Randfontein spca inspector responsible must be removed from animal welfare completely. There is no place for people like this in organisations meant to protect animals.

I completely understand why Owl Rescue Centre no longer wants SPCA accreditation.

The SPCA has lost its way, and ethical rescue organisations should not be forced to follow policies they do not believe are in the best interests of the animals they save.
