While on his way to Michells Plain to drop off a recently discharged dog, our Inspector Danfred made a heartbreaking discovery. As he drove past an open field, his eyes caught some movement - and upon stopping to investigate, he found two tiny pups.

These little souls, though small, have already experienced so much in their short lives - living in constant fear, scavenging for food, and seeking shelter among the litter and rubble of the streets. But today, their lives have changed.

Thanks to Danfred’s quick thinking, they are now safe at Mdzananda Animal Clinic, where they are receiving the medical care and love they deserve. Slowly, they will learn that they no longer need to fear. They will never again have to fend for themselves or face the harsh realities of the streets.

From this moment forward, they will only know gentle hands, kind words, and a life filled with love. These pups are on their way to a brighter future, and we can't wait to see them thrive. 💙

Meet Codi! 🐾

Codi is a beautiful, spirited girl with a heart full of love just waiting to find her perfect forever home. She’s estimated to be about 6 years old and is currently our longest-staying resident at Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter.

Codi’s journey hasn’t been the easiest - she came to us as a stray in 2022. She briefly got a taste of family life but was sadly returned after she found a little too much fun in pulling the washing off the line. While cheeky at times, this just shows her playful, inquisitive nature! With the right guidance and stimulation, Codi will make an incredibly rewarding companion.

Codi is a high-energy girl who loves to jump (and she can jump very high!). For her safety and happiness, she needs a home with high, secure walls and a family who understands the needs of an active dog. She is extremely intelligent and thrives when her mind and body are kept busy. Daily exercise, positive reinforcement training, and lots of mental stimulation will help her shine even brighter.

Over time, Codi has learned to make friends with her shelter mates. While she wasn’t always comfortable around other dogs, with good management and proper introductions, she now gets along very well with the other dogs at our shelter. We believe she can continue this progress in a loving home.
Codi hasn’t been tested with cats and we would prefer her new home to be cat-free.

If you’re an active person or family looking for a loyal, clever, fun-loving companion, Codi could be your perfect match. She is bursting with potential and will be a truly special addition to the right home.

Give Codi the second chance she deserves - she’s been waiting so patiently for you.

We have some heartbreaking news to share…
Princess, our sweet and gentle girl, will be returning to the Mdzananda Shelter. Her incredible foster mom, who has given her so much love and comfort, has had to go into hospital unexpectedly. Our thoughts are with her during this difficult time, and we are deeply grateful for the love she gave Princess.

It saddens us to see Princess leave the warmth of a loving home and return to the challenging reality of shelter life. If you’ve been considering opening your heart and home to a furry companion, this is the perfect time. Princess is in urgent need of a new foster home - or even better, a forever home where she can feel safe, loved, and settled once more.

Please reach out if you can help.

He arrived with a chain dragging beside him. Padlock still attached. Wire deeply embedded in his neck. The pain? Unimaginable.

This sweet boy was brought in as a stray. The wire “collar” had cut deep into his neck - muscle and tissue exposed. It had clearly been there for a long time, never loosened as he grew. He had been chained up. And he had suffered.

At Mdzananda, we say this clearly: Tying or chaining a dog is ILLEGAL. It is also completely inhumane.

We understand why some people do it. Maybe your yard isn’t fenced. Maybe you’re scared your dog will run away. Maybe you think it’s the only way to keep them safe.

But dogs are not meant to be tied up. They’re curious, energetic, social. They need to move, explore, be part of a family - not live on the end of a chain.

And when they aren’t sterilised, hormones take over. They roam. They dig. They jump. They fight to break free - especially when a female in the area is on heat.

But here’s the good news: We can help.

At Mdzananda, we have a Fencing Project for the people and pets of Khayelitsha. If your yard isn’t enclosed and you’re using a chain because you don’t know what else to do - please reach out. We can assist you in creating a safe space without the use of chains.

There is a better way. A kinder way.

This brave boy is now recovering after surgery. Dr Brain cleaned and stitched his wounds. He still has a long road ahead, but he will never be chained again. He will know love.

He needs a special name. Drop your suggestions in the comments.

If you’d like to help with his surgery, food, castration and care:

Meet Hope! 🐾

Hope is a 5-year-old bundle of joy and love, who arrived at Mdzananda Animal Clinic in 2023 with his two siblings, all three suffering from terrible mange. After receiving the treatment they needed, his siblings were lucky enough to find their forever homes, but Hope is still waiting for his. 💙

Hope is full of life and ready to be your loyal companion. He absolutely loves playing fetch and enjoys the company of all his shelter mates. He's extremely charming and adores a gentle cuddle. Hope is well-socialized with other dogs and would get along wonderfully with feline friends too! 🐶🐱

His ideal home would have a spacious yard where he can run and play to his heart's content. And, of course, he'd love to go on regular walking adventures with his human companion. 🏃‍♂️🌳

If you're looking for a loving, playful, and well-mannered companion, Hope might just be the dog you've been hoping for! 🐾💖

Cuddles, kisses, and royal charm - meet Princess!

At about 9 weeks old, Princess is a tiny ball of sunshine with a heart full of love. Her awesome foster mommy told us that Princess is always ready to share cuddles, kisses, happy tail wags, and of course, plenty of royal charm!

Princess is:

🐾 Gentle with little ones

🐾 Playful with her doggie siblings

🐾 Friendly with curious kitties

🐾 Clever, curious, and oh-so-charming (have you seen her royal head tilts?)

Her favourite hobbies include making new friends, stealing socks for royal treasure hunts, and turning on the puppy-dog eyes for maximum treats!
Her dream day? A park adventure, a snack fit for a princess, and a cozy nap surrounded by her favourite people and furry friends.

Princess was surrendered to Mdzananda along with her two siblings - sister Rhea, who is currently available for adoption through HART-Helderberg Animal Rescue Team, and brother Benji, who found his magical forever family this past Saturday at our Puppy Adoption Day in Somerset West!

Princess is patiently waiting for her forever family to treat her like the little queen she is. In return, she'll shower you with endless love, loyalty, and a few cheeky kisses!

Thank You, HART!

Helping animals is a team effort, and today we give a huge shoutout to HART - Helderberg Animal Rescue Team - Western Cape for standing by Mdzananda year after year.

Thanks to you, many of our puppies have left the shelter life behind and gone straight into loving foster homes - cozy beds, cuddles, and family care from an early age!

You’ve given our pups the best start to their new lives, and we are forever grateful for your partnership, your hearts, and your hands.

Together, we change lives - one little paw at a time.

Thank you, HART!
