Letโ€™s talk hips & elbows in large breeds. ๐Ÿพ

One thing people need to understand is that hips and elbows are not ONLY genetic. Genetics absolutely matter, but environment plays a huge role too.

Joint health is often a combination of:
โ€ข Genetics
โ€ข Growth rate
โ€ข Nutrition
โ€ข Weight management
โ€ข Exercise
โ€ข Environment during development

Large breed puppies are not meant to grow too fast. Their bones, joints, ligaments and growth plates are still developing, and too much stress during this stage can place unnecessary strain on hips and elbows.

Things that matter more than people realise:

โ€ข Overfeeding โ€” more food does not mean healthier growth. Excess calories can push puppies to grow too quickly and carry extra weight on immature joints.

โ€ข Keeping them lean โ€” lean puppies place far less pressure on developing hips and elbows. Heavy puppies may look โ€œbig and strong,โ€ but extra weight during growth can be hard on joints.

โ€ข Excessive protein/calories โ€” overdoing rich foods, supplements and high-calorie diets can contribute to rapid growth.

โ€ข Too much jumping โ€” repeated jumping off couches, stairs, beds, vehicles and excessive ball throwing can place strain on growing joints and growth plates.

โ€ข Forced exercise โ€” long-distance running, over-training young dogs or too much repetitive high-impact activity is not ideal for developing large breeds.

โ€ข Slippery floors and poor muscle conditioning can also affect joint stability during growth.

Slow, controlled growth is healthier growth.

People often focus only on bloodlines, but how a large breed puppy is raised during those important growth months matters enormously too. ๐Ÿ–ค

A highly respected figure within the SV, Herr Weber has dedicated decades to the advancement of the German Shepherd Dog. Since joining the SV in 1978, he has bred under the kennel โ€œvom Augrundโ€, served extensively as a protection work helper, and held key leadership roles including Regional Breed Warden and member of the SV Breeding Committee.

Appointed as an SV breed judge in 2004 and later as ๐๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ ๐–๐š๐ซ๐๐ž๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐’๐•, Herr Weber has judged at the prestigious BSZS, including the Working Classes. His experience, knowledge, and contribution to the breed place him among the most esteemed authorities in the German Shepherd Dog world.

We are honoured to have him as one of our judges at NBS 2026.

With a lifelong dedication to the German Shepherd Dog, Herr Gabriel has built an exceptional reputation within the SV and internationally. From earning approximately 50 IPO titles and serving over 25 years as a protection work helper, to breeding under his renowned kennel โ€œvom Quartier Latinโ€, his contribution to the breed is both extensive and influential.

A qualified SV conformation judge since 2006 and Kรถrmeister since 2012, Herr Gabriel has judged at prestigious Sieger Shows worldwide, including the ๐๐’๐™๐’, and has handled and bred multiple top-ranking and VA dogs.

Having previously judged in South Africa, we are proud to once again welcome him to our Nationals.

These handsome little guys had their very first vet visit today for their first vaccinations โ€” and they were absolute superstars! ๐Ÿ’‰โœจ Not a single complaintโ€ฆ just wagging tails and curious noses taking it all in.
