🐾☀️ Hot Weather & Your Dog – Think Before You Walk! ☀️🐾
As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that dogs handle heat very differently to humans. What might feel warm to us can be dangerous or even life-threatening for our dogs.
🔥 Hot Pavement Burns Paws
Roads and pavements heat up much faster than the air temperature. On a warm day, the ground can become hot enough to burn your dog’s paw pads in seconds. A simple test is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds — if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.
💧 Risk of Dehydration
Dogs lose a lot of moisture through panting. In hot weather they can dehydrate very quickly, especially during exercise. Dehydration can lead to weakness, confusion, and serious health issues.
🌡 Heatstroke is a Real Danger
Dogs cannot cool themselves the same way humans do because they don’t sweat through their skin. They mainly rely on panting to regulate body temperature, which is not very effective in extreme heat. Heatstroke can happen quickly and may cause vomiting, collapse, organ failure, and even death if not treated immediately.
🐶 Some Dogs Are at Higher Risk
Certain dogs struggle even more in the heat, including:
• Flat-faced breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs)
• Older dogs or puppies
• Overweight dogs
• Dogs with thick coats or health conditions
🌅 When Is It Safer to Walk?
Try to walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Shorter walks, shaded routes, and bringing water can also help keep your dog safe.
❤️ Remember: If it feels hot to you, it’s likely much worse for your dog.
