HEAT BEFORE HUNGER
We don't beat about the bush. At Raise 'n Rescue we have the most experienced neonatal bottle feeder foster moms who have saved thousands of kittens, working thousands of hours. So if anyone can help a vulnerable, newborn kitten, it is an experienced RnR foster mom, but we cannot beat nature.
Even when we do our best, it is so frustrating when we get kittens and one or more of them die shortly after we get them.
Most of the time, neonatal kittens die of hypothermia within hours. So often we deal with inexperienced rescuers who try to do good by just putting a blanket or towel over kittens and feeding them cow's milk.
Please take note of the CORRECT cause of action when neonatal kittens are found without a mother.
DO NOT FEED THEM. Whatever you do, do not focus on feeding them. They can live much longer without food than they can without heat.
The first thing to do is get a heat source.
Kittens younger than 4 weeks cannot control their own body temperature, they need a heat source. Use an empty cooldrink bottle or a hot water bottle or something safe that will supply heat for the kittens. A blanket alone is not an adequate way of keeping them warm. Please make sure they don't overheat, but they are closed up with a safe heat source until you can get help.
Tonight we were asked to help 2 kittens who's mother disappeared quite a while ago. The one kitten passed on shortly after they arrived. We do believe this could have been prevented if proper action was taken in time.
Please immediately keep them warm and then find help. Winter is harsh on kittens, they just don't survive as easy.
RIP baby, we will try our best for the remaining sibling.
